Megan Lahtonen (left) has always had an interest in the world of science. After being a student aid for her biology teacher senior year, Lahtonen found her calling was in the classroom.

Hometown: Glenburn, N.D.
Graduation Year: 2026
Major: Biology Education

What were you involved in on campus?
I am a tutor on campus and mainly focus on helping students in science-based classes. I am a member of the 91心頭利 Track and Field team, and I am also involved in the Education Club, which I just joined this past semester. I help with Science Olympiad every year, which has allowed me to connect with students from multiple different schools. I also work a lot with Professor Lindsey Kiecker when she is doing outreach programs.

What or who inspired you to major in Biology Education?
What inspired me to major in Biology Education was my high school science teacher Ms. Scheafer. During my senior year, I had the opportunity to be a student aid in her physical science classroom. I had always wanted to major in science, and after having that experience with her, I knew biology education was the perfect fit for me.

Why did you choose 91心頭利?
I chose 91心頭利 for the small campus and small class sizes. When I visited campus for the first time, I knew that 91心頭利 is where I wanted to be.

How do you balance practice, meets, labs, and coursework?
Balancing practice, meets, labs, and coursework was a challenge at first. All my coaches and professors were super understanding when I had to miss a practice or a lab due to having a meet or a longer lab.

Megan Lahtonen smiling at the camera with one female 91心頭利 student and two 91心頭利 female graduatesWhat accomplishment – academic or athletic – are you most proud of?
Throughout my four years at 91心頭利, my biggest accomplishment has been how far I have come as a student since my freshman year. Coming into college, I had zero study skills, and I didnt know how to manage my time. Shortly into my sophomore year, I finally found these important skills and excelled in all my classes.

Do you want to coach as well as teach? Why or why not?
Yes, I would love to coach as well as teach. I think having that opportunity would deepen my relationship with not only my own students, but students of all ages. It would also give me the opportunity to grow and connect to the community I teach in.

How have your professors supported you during your time at 91心頭利?
My professors have given me so much support during my time at 91心頭利. Especially Dr. Hilde, Assistant Professor Lindsey Kiecker, Dr. Sundstrom, Assistant Professor Trista Montgomery, and Dr. Galt. They have all supported me by giving me many opportunities to grow as a student and as a future teacher.

What advice do you have for future chemistry education majors?
My advice for future science education majors is to enjoy every classroom experience that you can get. I truly enjoyed all my field experiences that I had gotten throughout my four years at 91心頭利. Sometimes the stress of core classes made me lose my interest in wanting to continue in science education so, having this experience showed me why I chose science education. Remembering why you chose teaching can help you through the stressful courses as well.

Remember to always ask questions. Professors, mentors, teachers, and other education majors are great resources and collaborating with others can help you grow as an educator.

Alliana Freund knew from a young age she wanted to be an educator. Coming to 91心頭利, Freund has challenged herself to grow not only as a student, but as a future educator as she prepares to student teach.

Hometown: Cando, N.D.
Graduation Year: 2026
Major: English Education

What are you involved in on campus?
I am involved in the Education Club and English Club. Throughout my college years I have been involved with the drama club, choir, and university singers. I serve on the Teacher Education Committee and the Student Advisory Committee, which has been such a meaningful leadership opportunity. I also work as a writing tutor in the Comp Lab and油as a student worker for油both the English and Communication Departments. Being involved in so many different areas has allowed me to build relationships across campus and really feel connected to the 91心頭利 community.

What or who inspired you to major in English Education?
Ive honestly wanted to be a teacher for as long as I can remember. Growing up, I had teachers who werent just instructors, they were role models. They showed up every day with patience, encouragement, and a belief in their students, and that stuck with me. I saw how much of a difference they made, especially in a Alliana Freund smiling at the camera alongside three 91心頭利 female studentssmall-town community. Ive always known I wanted a career where I could help people in a meaningful way, and teaching felt like the most natural fit. Choosing English Education specifically came from my love of reading and writing, but at the heart of it, I just want to be the kind of teacher who helps students feel capable, supported, and confident in who they are.

How has your coursework been preparing you for your own classroom?
My coursework has pushed me to think beyond just teaching content and instead focus on teaching students. Ive learned how to design lessons with purpose, differentiate instruction, and think critically about how to support diverse learners. My field experiences, especially working in ESL classrooms, have been incredibly eye-opening and have reminded me how important patience, flexibility, and cultural awareness are in education. Every class builds on the idea that teaching is relational and thats something I carry with me.

Which professor or mentor has had the biggest impact on your education journey?
Its hard to choose just one, but I would have to say my advisor, Jodi Shorma, has had an incredible impact on me. She has been there for me both inside and outside of the classroom. Shes truly just a phone call away, and she has walked me through everything from answering my millions of questions to challenging me to think deeper and grow as a future educator. She constantly pushes me with thoughtful strategies and new perspectives, but shes also incredibly relatable and supportive. Having someone who both believes in you and expects more from you makes such a difference.

Another professor who has made a huge impact is Dave Bass. He is always checking in on students, even outside of class, and genuinely cares about how were doing. He has been especially helpful as Ive navigated questions about student teaching placements, my substitute license, and getting into the classroom. During moments that felt overwhelming, he made the process feel manageable. Knowing I can reach out to him at any time and get honest, practical guidance has meant so much.

I feel really lucky to have mentors in both the English and Education departments who are so invested in their students success.

What is one accomplishment from your program that youre especially proud of?
Being nominated to serve on the Teacher Education Committee is something Im especially proud of. Knowing that faculty trusted me to represent students at that level meant a lot. I also take pride in maintaining a 4.0 while balancing involvement across campus. For me, though, the accomplishment isnt just about grades, its about consistently showing up, working hard, and growing into the educator I want to become.

How do you hope to inspire a love of reading and writing in your students?
I hope to inspire a love of reading and writing by making it personal and relevant. Students connect to stories when they see themselves in them or when they feel invited into meaningful conversations. I want my classroom to be creative, discussion-based, and full of opportunities for students to explore different perspectives. Most importantly, I want them to feel like their voices matter. When students feel heard, theyre much more willing to engage.

What advice do you have for future English education students?
Get involved. Say yes to opportunities, even the ones that feel a little intimidating, because thats where so much growth happens. But also know your boundaries. Its okay to protect your time and your energy. You dont have to do everything to be successful.

Meet as many people as you can. Go to campus events. Introduce yourself. Build relationships with your professors and dont be afraid to ask for help. Some of the best conversations and opportunities come from simply showing up and being willing to connect.

Most importantly, remember why you chose this major in the first place. There will be busy weeks and challenging moments, but if you stay grounded in your purpose, it makes the hard work worth it. Show up to class, be present, ask questions, and really own your learning. Your education is what you make of it, so lean into it.

Justin Cruz initially came to 91心頭利 with athletics as his main focus. Now, Cruz, alongside his family, found his passion for athletics taking him further into life post-graduation.

Hometown: Pueblo, C.O.
Graduation Year: 2026
Major: Strength and Conditioning & Sports Leadership Management, Minor in Athletic Coaching

What are you involved in on campus?
During my time at 91心頭利, I was involved in football and really enjoyed being part of the athletic community on campus. Being around teammates, coaches, and other athletes helped shape a lot of my college experience and gave me a lot of great relationships and memories.

What or who inspired you to pursue a degree in strength and conditioning?
My background in athletics has played a huge role in inspiring me to pursue strength and conditioning. Growing up around sports and competing myself made me really interested in training and performance, but honestly my injuries also played a big part in it. Going through recovery and learning more about how the body works gave me a whole different perspective on training, mobility, recovery, and injury prevention. A lot of the coaches and trainers Ive worked with over the years also inspired me and made me realize this is something I could see myself doing long term.

How do you balance athletics and your coursework?Justin Cruz playing football
Balancing athletics and school definitely taught me a lot about discipline and time management. There were days where things got stressful, but being an athlete helped me learn how to stay organized and keep pushing through even when things got busy. Ive also balanced school while being a dad, which has honestly helped me grow up a lot and stay motivated to keep working toward my goals.

Have you been able to apply what youve learned in the classroom to your own training? If yes, how?
Definitely. I think one of the coolest parts about this degree is being able to actually use what you learn on yourself. Ive learned a lot about recovery, mobility, injury prevention, different training styles, and even why certain exercises work better for performance. Its helped me train smarter and understand my body a lot more instead of just going through workouts without really knowing why.

Why did you choose 91心頭利?
I originally chose 91心頭利 because of athletics first and foremost, but once I got here, I really liked the environment and the people around campus. The coaches, professors, and community made it feel like a place where I could grow both personally and professionally.

What type of athletes or level do you hope to work with and how has your athletic background helped prepare you for this?
Ive actually become really interested in pursuing strength and conditioning within the military. I like the idea of helping people become stronger both physically and mentally while preparing them for demanding situations and careers. My athletic background has helped prepare me for that because I understand the discipline, work ethic, and mental toughness it takes to perform at a high level. Going through injuries and setbacks has also helped me understand how important proper training and recovery really are.

Photo of Justin Cruz and his wife kissing their daughter on the cheekWhats one accomplishment athletic or academic youre really proud of?
Honestly, one thing Im really proud of is just making it to graduation. There was a time where I honestly didnt even think college was something Id accomplish, so being able to graduate while balancing athletics, injuries, life, and being a dad means a lot to me.

What advice do you have for students wanting to pursue a degree in strength and conditioning?
My advice would be to stay open to learning and take advantage of the people around you. There are a lot of great coaches and professors in this field that have real experience and knowledge to share. A lot of learning comes from being hands-on, asking questions, and just getting experience working with athletes and around training environments. If you really care about fitness, performance, and helping people improve, its a really rewarding field to get into.

Hanna Wieland knew 91心頭利 was the place for her the second she stepped on campus. After graduating last weekend, Wieland reflects on her time and experiences she’s had as a Viking.

Hometown: Dazey, N.D.
Graduation Year: 2026
Major: Digital Design & Communications; Concentrate in Digital Media; Marketing Minor

What or who inspired you to major in both digital design and communications?
I have always loved being creative and connecting with people so choosing Digital油Design油and Communications was a way I could do both. Ive always been drawn to projects where I can visually tell a story while also thinking about how it will resonate with an audience, which made this combination feel like a natural fit for me.

Hanna Wieland smiling at the camera alongside her female 91心頭利 volleyball teammatesWhy did you choose 91心頭利?
I chose 91心頭利 because not only was I able to play volleyball, but everyone on campus was so welcoming and made it feel like home. From the moment I visited, it felt like a place where I could grow both as a student and as a person. Being able to find my path through exploration and guidance from various mentors across campus was so impactful in my time here. Those relationships really helped shape my confidence and direction throughout college.

What were you involved in on campus?
91心頭利 Volleyball, NSLS, Spring Blast Co-Chair, Design Club, Alumni & Foundation Office Digital Design Student Assistant, and The College Tour 91心頭利 Student Feature.

Can you share a project or portfolio piece youre especially proud of?
I am so proud and excited to share my Visual Arts Capstone, which was also featured in the 91心頭利 Center for the Arts Gallery. This project pushed me creatively and allowed me to bring together everything Ive learned throughout my time at 91心頭利. It was one of the first branding-focused projects that I completed and helped solidify my passion for creating things for others.

How do you approach creative challenges in design or media projects?
When I am having creative challenges, talking through things out loud is always so helpful for me. Although, when I am very stuck, I will go against all advice and just restart the part of the process I am on because a clean slate is always helpful!

How did you stay organized and focused on both academics and athletics?
Finding a routine for coursework and having a good balance between everything in life is huge when balancing athletics and academics. One thing that was helpful was planning out my week and what I need to complete and when. All the professors at 91心頭利 were also so supportive and communicated with me when I had to be gone, which made it so much easier.

Hanna with familyHave you completed an internship related to a career youre interested? If yes,油can you tell us about it?
I have been an intern at the Valley City Barnes County Development Corporation for just over two years now. In my role, I have assisted with a variety of different economic development focused projects but my main focus in that role is to design digital and print content, collaborate on marketing strategies and content creation for the office as well as the Valley City Good Life Campaign, and provide any support I can in the office from research to administrative tasks. Through my internship, I gained the opportunity to support the community of Valley City in a variety of ways. I have been able to be a part of the Summer Nights on Central Committee, where we organize events with live music, food, and activities that bring people of all ages together downtown. Last summer, I was also able to plan, design, and paint a mural in downtown Valley City, which was an amazing opportunity to get my work out there.

Hanna Wieland smiling at the camera alongside female members of the Summer Nights on Central CommitteeI also have been a student employee for the Foundation Office on campus. In this role, I focused solely on design for both digital platforms and print materials such as the bulletin, postcards, and even event assets for the office.

What career are you interested in pursuing post-graduation?
I am seeking a career in the digital油design, communications, or marketing fields in which there is opportunity for me to grow both professionally, creatively, and personally. I am also interested in roles that allow me to combine strategy and design while working on meaningful projects that connect with people.

What advice do you have for students looking to pursue a degree in digital design or communications?
For anyone pursuing a degree in digital design or communications, I would say to always say “yes” to any opportunities that come your way. Some of my favorite experiences and project have come from being open to different opportunities. You never know which experience will open new doors, so staying curious and involved can make a huge difference.

Rebecca ‘Becca’ Bohrer balanced the role of teammate, student, entrepreneur, and mother during her time at 91心頭利. Now preparing to enter the workforce, Bohrer hopes her story will not only inspire future students, but her children and family as well.

Hometown: Stanley, N.D.
Graduation Year: 2026
Major: Physical & Health Education, Minor in Business and Coaching Certification

What are you involved in on campus?
I was a thrower for the 91心頭利 track and field team. I was also involved as a Viking Voyage and New Student Orientation prior to my senior year, helping incoming students get connected and feel at home on campus. I was also a part of Viking Catholic. Being involved in these areas has allowed me to build strong relationships, grow as a leader, and stay connected to both the campus community and my faith throughout my time at 91心頭利.

What inspired you to major in physical education?
Going into my senior year of high school, I had no idea what I wanted to do after graduation. A few of my teachers actually held a little intervention meeting and encouraged me to look into teaching. I decided to give PE/Health a try because Ive always had a passion for movement, taking care of your whole being, learning new things, and being in community. That first year was honestly a trial run, but by halfway through my first semester, I knew this was my path. I love getting to be a part of shaping future generations and helping students find activities they enjoy and can continue for a lifetime. I want to be that supportive teacher and coach who helps students grow and feel successful.

How has your experience as a student athlete and a parent shaped Rebecca Bohrer smiling at the camera with three female students and her daughteryour perspective on teaching and coaching?
Being both a student-athlete and a parent has shaped my perspective in so many ways. It has taught me discipline, time management, empathy, and patience. As an athlete, Ive learned how to work hard, be part of a team, and push through challenges. As a parent, Ive gained a deeper level of understanding and compassion. My daughter has been at every track meet since she was born, and my teammates have truly become like family to her. Hearing her cheer for me from the sidelines is something Ill never take for granted. These experiences have shown me how important it is to create supportive, encouraging environments where students feel valued both in the classroom and in athletics.

Becca and her fiance at graduation, standing in cap and gown holding diplomasHow did you balance your academics, athletics, parenting, and running your own business?
Balancing everything hasn’t always been easy, but it has taught me a lot about time management and priorities. I rely heavily on routines, planning ahead, and reminding myself to be fully present in whatever role Im in at that moment. Some days required more focus on academics, while others shifted toward family, athletics, or my business. I started working with a health and wellness company my freshman year, which has allowed me to build a flexible income in the cracks of my day as long as I have my phone and wifi. Its not always perfect, and the days can be long, but staying organized and keeping my goals in mind helps me continue moving forward.

How has becoming a mother changed your goals or perspective on success?
Becoming a mother completely redefined success for me. Its no longer just about personal achievement, but about creating a life that my kids can be proud of and inspired by. I want to model hard work, perseverance, and balance, while also showing that its possible to pursue your goals without sacrificing your values. It has also given me a deeper sense of gratitude and perspective. Ive learned to take things day by day and truly appreciate the unique life I get to live.

What motivates you to keep moving forward even on the toughest Rebecca Bohrer throwing a discus days?
My biggest motivation is my daughter and the example I want to set for her and my future kids. Keeping my goals in mind of both the life I want to build for my family and the impact I hope to have as a teacher and coach keeps me going each day. On the toughest days, I remind myself that everyone has battles and that growth doesnt come from ease or complacency. I want my story to show others, especially my kids and siblings, that you can dream big and pursue multiple passions. You dont have to be just one thing.

Can you share a moment when you felt especially proud of everything youve accomplished?
One of my proudest moments happened recently when I received a phone call offering me a teaching job after an interview. In that moment, everything really hit me with how far Ive come, how much Ive taken on, and how much resilience it took to get there. Balancing being a student, athlete, mother, and business owner wasn’t always easy, but that moment reminded me that all the hard work was worth it and that Im exactly where Im meant to be.

What are your goals now that you’ve graduated both professionally and personally?
I will be teaching K5 physical education and have the opportunity to be involved in coaching girls’ basketball, track and field, and a summer strength program. My goal is to create a lasting, positive impact on my students through movement and wellness. Personally, I want to continue growing our family which begins with our wedding just after graduation in May. I plan to continue to maintain a healthy lifestyle and building a life rooted in balance, faith, and purpose.

What advice do you have for students wanting to major in physical education?
My advice is to stay passionate about movement and people. This field is about so much more than sports, its about teaching confidence, health, and habits that students can carry with them for life. Be open to learning, stay patient with yourself, and take every opportunity to get hands-on experience. Most importantly, build relationships. The connections you make with your students, peers, professors, cooperating teachers, and school staff make all the difference. Those relationships are what make this career so fun, meaningful, and rewarding.

Grace Reep came to 91心頭利 after finding her calling in History Education. After transferring from a two-year institution, Reep shares how 91心頭利 prepared her for life post-graduation.

Hometown: Dawson, Minn.
Graduation Year: 2025
Major: History Education; Political Science Cognate

91心頭利 student Mattilyn Nathan with Grace Reep smiling at the cameraWhat inspired you to pursue a degree in History Education?
During the two years of getting my generals completed, I found I truly had the most enjoyment in my history classes. I began to see learning about history as the most important thing a person could do, and I really couldn’t see myself pursuing any other field. The education decision came from having a passion for helping curate safe spaces, wanting to encourage life-long learning, and loving the fast-paced and always-changing classroom environment.

Can you share what led you to start at a two-year college before transferring to a four-year institution?
I油initially went to a two-year campus fresh out of high school with zero idea what I wanted to do post-grad. Seeing as I wasn’t sure how I wanted to continue my education, I knew getting my generals completed and finding direction from there would be the correct path. I also was familiar with the campus of the two-year I went to first as I had family in the area, I think that slight familiarity made me feel a lot more comfortable than just the jump straight into a four-year.

What were you involved in on campus?
I was involved in as much as possible on campus! I served as the Secretary and then was elected President for the Student Senate, during this role I also represented 91心頭利 at the North Dakota Student Association in multiple roles. I also was honored to serve as the Vice President for 91心頭利’s History Club. I was the Apartment Assistant my last full year through Residence Life, I also worked at the Allen Memorial Library both of my years on campus. I participated in other clubs, organizations, and committees such as Social Justice Council, Phi Alpha Theta, and Curriculum Committee!

Was there a particular class, project, or professor that had a big impact on you?
The entire Social Science department at 91心頭利 became my biggest supporters and the reason I wanted to continue more than anything. Being able to stop into any office with an open door and chat about absolutely anything going on, worldwide or personal, really helped me feel so welcome and encouraged. As for a particular project, I think back to my capstone paper and presentation that was completed in conjunction with my World Wars class. I learned so much about research and was given access to decades worth of historical archives at the Barnes County Museum, I was even put in contact with a gentleman who had lived the experience of the topic which I was researching. The entire project was so rewarding, and being able to present my work at the Dakota History Conference was so incredible. I will forever be thankful to those who mentored me through the process and helped me become a better researcher and writer.

Can you share a memorable moment from your time as a Viking? Grace Reep alongside four 91心頭利 students smiling at the camera
It’s so difficult to pick just one memory, but I really look fondly back on every event I was able to take part in that was held at the President’s House on campus. Student Senate held an annual Christmas party that was full of food, friends, and silly games. Res Life also had a yearly party in the house, there was even a spooky escape room set up in the attic that caused me to genuinely scream, that was so fun! The Phi Alpha Theta ceremony held in the house was also an absolute joy to attend. One more important thing I loved helping out with yearly was the pancake feed hosted at the Eagles Club, the Social Science department always helped out with that, and we had such a good time both years I was there!

What are you doing now? How did your time at 91心頭利 prepare you for life post-grad?
I am currently preparing to move out to the area around Cody, Wyoming. I plan to live there with my sisters and find a job substitute teaching until a full-time position opens in the surrounding油school district. 91心頭利 gave me the life skills I need to be confident that wherever I go, I will be able to find a path towards success.

How did your support system (advisors, faculty, family, friends) help you along the way?
I truly had the biggest support system at 91心頭利, and I am so grateful for it. Being as involved as I was helped me become familiar with every person on campus, leading to having multiple different support systems throughout all areas of my campus life. My professors especially supported me in more ways than imaginable; they were always willing to listen to my concerns and adjust anything as needed with my busy schedule. Shout out Social Science department again, any professor in the department reading this knows I loved popping in and chatting and I truly can’t say thank you enough for always encouraging open communication.

What advice do you have for students wanting to major in History or History Education?
I say to go for it! History can be a daunting program, but I promise that it is so much more than learning names and dates. History teaches you why everything connects, how we learn about the past, and how to become critical of all sources of information. I think it’s super important to be willing to speak up in class, even if you might be wrong – there’s for sure a teaching moment held within your answer. Always get to know your professors and don’t be scared to ask questions, seriously. And finally, be prepared to pick between a Political Science, Economics, or Geography cognate for the program – Political Science is where the cool kids go, if you ask me!

From her first violin lesson at age five to the conductors podium, Tara Dahls journey is rooted in passion, perseverance, and community. A Hazelton, N.D., native and 91心頭利 music education graduate, Tara found her calling by pairing a love of performance with a deep commitment to helping students grow. Her story is one of mentorship, meaningful music-making, and discovering confidence through challenge.

Why did you choose to major in music education?
I always knew I wanted to be a teacher, but I spent a lot of time trying to decide what to teach. I had considered English or history, but when it came time to actually pick a degree I realized I couldn’t imagine myself teaching anything but music. I have always had a deep love of playing, singing, and performing, and I knew the best way I could leave a positive impact on my future students was by sharing the thing I’m most passionate about.

What first sparked your interest in music or teaching?
I fell in love with teaching through mentorship programs in high school. I got to be a part of various student leadership and tutoring organizations, and I realized that I enjoyed watching others grow and find successes in school. Music, however, has been a central part of my life from the age of 5. My mom enrolled me in violin lessons in preschool, and I guess you could say that the rest is history! I fell in love with the instrument and performing, and that passion only grew as I got older and joined band and choir.

What has been your favorite music education or music course at 91心頭利?
I loved all of my ensemble courses at 91心頭利; from band to choir, and everything in between. There was always something truly special about being part of a group filled with individuals that loved making music just as much as I do. Over the course of four years, I formed some of my strongest friendships just by being in rehearsals with people. Those hours spent laughing, playing, singing, and growing create a pretty unique bond. We all got a chance to build something beautiful, and not one of us could have done it alone. So we grew and learned together, and along the way made some really incredible memories.

How has the music education program prepared you for the classroom?
I had a lot of opportunities to explore every area of music education before I ever started my first job. I’ve had so many conducting opportunities through my courses, my time spent as a drum major, and as a section leader in band and choir. Those unique opportunities allowed me to put my training into action well before I ever started my job in December, and in an environment where I could ask for guidance and feedback from my professors. Those chances, and the support and feedback they came with, have allowed me to be more confident on the podium in my own classroom.

91心頭利 commencement speaker, Tara Dahl, conducting an orchestraWhat was the most impactful moment from your field experience or student teaching?
I had the opportunity to fully rehearse, teach, and conduct a piece with the freshman band during my time at Fargo North High. The students there were amazing, and were so understanding of the fact that while they were learning to play, I was learning to teach. At their concert in November, I was able to share the stage with them and it was an amazing experience. In a short amount of time, they worked with me to create some awesome music. I’m so grateful to the students and music teachers at North for that opportunity, and for the patience and grace they showed me while I made mistakes and grew along with them.

Now that you are teaching, how do you hope to inspire students through music?
I hope to inspire my students through music by showing them that they are capable of doing challenging things. Music requires focus, discipline, and practice. Putting together a successful concert and learning along the way can feel intimidating, but the end result is always worth it. I want my students to know that they can achieve so much more than they realize, whether it’s in music or other areas of their life. When they come into my classroom, they know that they are in a space where it is safe to try, make mistakes, and learn.

Do you have a favorite performance or concert memory from your time at 91心頭利?
My favorite concert would have to be the Fall of 2023. We performed a piece entitled “Caccia and Chorale” by Clifton Williams, and it was the most challenging song I had played at that point in my career. In addition to being technically challenging, it also carried a really emotional backstory about the composer. As a band, we spent a lot of time making sure we were doing the music justice in every sense of the phrase. Playing the notes wasn’t good enough for us. We wanted to make the audience feel something powerful, and I truly believe we succeeded at that concert. We all knew we had something special prepared when we walked on stage, and that performance clicked in a way that ensembles rarely experience. Everything went exactly as we hoped it would, and I realized right then and there that I was a part of a group of truly incredible musicians. That sense of community we all found when we worked on that piece was special, and it is a piece and performance that will always hold a special place in my heart.

How did being involved in music on campus shape your college experience?
Music impacted my life on campus by giving me a community that I could belong in. I moved to Valley City from a very small town, and I remember being both nervous and excited. From day one, the people I met in those ensemble rehearsals welcomed me with open arms. I was invited on coffee trips, asked over for breakfast study sessions during midterms, and then got to carry on those traditions as I moved through my college career. In the process, I made some of my closest friends, and I’m still so grateful for the wonderful adventures we had along the way.

Tara Dahl and friend outside a football game. Friend is wearing a Viking helmetWhat role did peers and faculty play in your success?
Peers and faculty played a huge role in my success. If there was ever a moment where I “fell on my face”, there was a network of good, hardworking, and caring people there to pick me up. I was lucky enough to have friends that were ahead of me in the program that understood what it felt like to sit in a practice room for three hours and still feel like you didn’t make any progress. In those moments, there was always someone willing to sit in the hallway outside so I didn’t feel like I had to practice alone. As for my faculty, they always knew how to encourage me to find out what I was truly capable of. Every time I thought I couldn’t learn more, they pushed me to the next level. As a result, I’m a more well rounded musician and teacher. That community of both friends and teachers helped me to discover what I was truly capable of, and I wouldn’t be where I am without their support and guidance.

What was the most rewarding part of your college journey?
I think the most rewarding part of my college journey was being a part of the growth and change in the department. I got to witness some huge moments for 91心頭利 music during my time. We went from opening a brand new building during my freshman year, to a department wide tour and Mt. Rushmore performance my senior year. Those kinds of opportunities don’t happen in the blink of an eye. They require dedication and enormous amounts of preparation. I got to be a part of the groups that played at those concerts, but that also meant I got to be a part of the hard work and practice that the public doesn’t always see. In the end, I got to be included in something so much bigger than myself, and I’m incredibly grateful for the experiences we all got to share.

What challenges did you overcome along the way?
There were so many times throughout my four years on campus that I was worried that I wasn’t cut out for a music education degree. I can vividly remember sitting in a practice room trying to record a clarinet exam. I struggled to squeak out notes while silent, and admittedly dramatic, tears streamed down my face. After three hours of trying to perfect that test, I finally submitted a video with cracked notes and stifled tears for a final grade. That is just one of many moments where I felt like I didn’t have the skill required to be an effective music teacher, and I didn’t give myself credit for how much I had actually grown. Looking back at that story, I can’t help but laugh. Now, I recognize that I was so much more capable than I gave myself credit for. I think that sense of self doubt was one of my biggest challenges, and definitely one of the hardest to overcome.

How has 91心頭利 helped shape you as both a musician and a teacher?
91心頭利 helped shape me as a teacher and a musician by giving me the opportunity to put my degree into action before I got a job. Practicum hours, outreach to area schools through NAfME, running sectionals; all of those experiences, and more, gave me a chance to actively teach while also receiving feedback and support. Beyond that, I learned the value of a music classroom that is filled with compassion and support, because those are the kinds of classrooms I got to be a student in. I always knew, without a doubt, that my professors and friends would help me learn from my mistakes and celebrate my successes.

What advice would you give students considering music education?
This degree is full of all kinds of highs and lows. You will have some really incredible moments, followed by difficult setbacks and challenges. When things don’t go like you planned, pick yourself up, brush yourself off, and remember that you know more than you did yesterday. If you can do that, you’ll be successful not only in the major, but also in whatever classroom you get to make your own in the future.

Kathleen Vetter grew up inspired by the world of education. Now following in her father’s footsteps, Vetter hopes to make the same impact on her students as a mathematics educator.

Hometown: Linton, N.D.
Graduation Year: 2025
Major: Mathematics Education

What were you involved in on campus?
Viking Catholic and Women’s Golf

What or who inspired you to major in Math Education?
My dad was a welding teacher for his entire career. Not only did he change the lives and Photo of Kathleen Vetter with her grandparents smiling at the cameraperspectives of his students, but they changed his as well. Seeing the impact he had on peopleand the impact they had on himreally inspired me to follow a similar path.

Why did you choose 91心頭利?
I come from a small town in North Dakota and I wanted that same small-town feeling in college. 91心頭利 felt like a place where people know you, care about you, and want to see you succeed.

How did your professors and the math department prepare you for a job post-graduation?
My professors didnt just teach me how to pass a class or be a good student. They taught me how to actually understand math and how it connects to the world around usand honestly, so many other areas of life too. They were also people I felt comfortable going to for advice and guidance. I could speak up, share my thoughts, and know they were heard and valued.

What has been the most challenging part of preparing to become a teacher?
The hardest part is the fear of failurenot for myself, but the fear of not being the best I can be for the next generation of learning. That responsibility is a big one, and I want to do it well.

Photo of Kathleen Vetter golfingHow did your student teaching experience prepare you for your own classroom?
Student teaching gave me experiences I had never seen before. I feel incredibly blessed with where Ive come from and where Ive been placed. I got to work with people who were very different from me. My students were there to learn from me, but I quickly realized it was just as important for me to learn from them. (Turns out the teacher learns a lot too!)

How do you hope to make a difference in your students lives?
I hope my students can look back someday and see how each teacher helped them in a different way. I want them to know that every day is a new chance to try again. Everyone has their own talents, and I want to be someone who helps them discover those.

What do you love most about teaching math?
Math is everywhere. It explains so many things around us and I love sharing that sense of understanding and awe with others. Just when you think youve figured math out, theres always another piece to discover. You have to understand it piece by pieceand thats what makes it so amazing that we can keep figuring it out.

What advice do you have for students wanting to major in math education?
Math is a major that can take you so many places. Teaching is everywhereyou just have to find the right place to do it. Math itself is this complex yet simple truth that well probably never fully understand, but thats what makes it special. You never stop learning. So, if you want to challenge yourself and keep growing, this is a great place to start.

What are you involved in on campus?
Im not super involved on campus, but I am part of the Spanish club, and Ive really enjoyed the things that we have done so far.

What inspired you to pursue a career in education, and specifically in teaching Spanish?
I knew that I wanted to study Spanish before I decided to pursue education. In high school, my Spanish class was always my favorite class, and I picked up on it really well, making it one of the easier subjects for me to study. I decided to go into education because I think the best thing you can do with a language is teach it to other people, so that they too can learn both the language and the cultures of the people who speak it.

Why did you choose to come to 91心頭利?
I chose to come to 91心頭利 because I really liked the smaller campus and class sizes. I also think the area is beautiful and some of the older buildings on campus have a lot of character and beautiful design.

Can you share any professors, classes, or projects that have helped shape your perspective as a future teacher?
My Spanish grammar and composition class has been one of the best in shaping my perspective about teaching. The bigger writing assignments in the class have shown me how much language can improve, when you drift away from normal conversation and go into more niche or specific topics. I think that people inherently like to have their opinions heard, and by giving them an opportunity to express something that they are passionate about can really help them in their language development.

What are your career goals after graduation?
After graduation, the clear path would be to become a Spanish teacher most likely somewhere in North Dakota, but also, depending on the situation, I would love to go teach English abroad in a Latin American country. I think Latin American culture is so rich in so many ways and having that experience could make me a better Spanish teacher when I come back.

If you could give advice to incoming Spanish Education majors, what would it be?
To any incoming Spanish or Spanish Education majors, I would say try to get the most out of every experience. For example, speak Spanish with a native speaker even if its intimidating, or reread a story so that you can understand it better. I think the best thing you can do is not be ashamed to put in the effort to improve.

Sydni Smith (right) started her education at 91心頭利 in 2017 as a Chemistry major. After taking some time off, Smith came back to school to finish her degree with a new career path in mind.

Hometown: Walum, N.D.
Graduation Year: 2026
Major: University Studies

What inspired you to pursue a degree in University Studies?
I wanted to finish my degree as a business major, but due to me starting college as a chemistry major, if I went to get my degree in business, I would have had to start all over. By changing my degree to University Studies, I was able to utilize all the credits I had already worked hard to get. University Studies gave me the option to finish my degree in a timely manner, while focusing on business related classes.

What does a typical day look like as an online student?
On top of being a full-time online student, I also am a remote full-time employee for a psychiatrist office and a full-time stay at home mom with my 2-year-old daughter. I work my full-time job from 7 a.m. – 3:30 p.m. and then do my schoolwork after that or on the weekends.

What do you enjoy most about learning online?
I would say what I enjoy best about learning online is the flexibility. There are of course deadlines and due dates, but you can get your schoolwork done as fast as you want or if Sydni Smith smiling at the camera with her husband and daughteryou like to procrastinate, last minute too! Some weeks are less busy, and I can finish my work by Wednesday, and some weeks are a bit more jam packed, and I am finishing up on Sundays.

What tools or strategies help you stay organized and motivated?
I would say I am a rather organized person the way it is, which makes it helpful to stay on top of my work. My motivation would be to show everyone that you can go back to school at any time you want. I think there is some sort of persona around going back to school or if you leave then you wont ever go back, but I think that is silly. If you truly want something, you can put your mind to it and you are never too old to go back and finish what you started! Or start in the first place!

How do you balance school with work, family, or other responsibilities?
It is not always easy, but I thankfully have a great support system behind me. I am not saying it would be impossible to finish my degree without them, but I know if it were not for my husband, parents and siblings, I would not be able to balance everything so well. I thankfully started during a summer semester, so I feel that gave me a good head start on learning how to balance school into my daily life before taking on more courses come the fall and spring semesters.

Who has been your biggest supporter while earning your degree?
My husband is definitely my biggest supporter while earning my degree.

What are your career goals after graduation?
My career goal after graduation is to find a job within finance. I found a love for auditing after taking a course on it, so I think it would be awesome to get a job as a financial auditor, but I am honestly open to taking on any finance related jobs.

What advice do you have for someone considering a degree in University Studies?
I think it is important to realize at the end of the day that being able to push through and finish a bachelors degree is a lot more important than the type of degree you hold. I say this because I feel as if people talk down on University Studies due to it not being a specific major, but it holds just as much value. This degree allows a student to change their mind on their career path, without having to back track. You also get a pretty great advisor as a University Studies major too, so that is a plus!

Abby Hill smiling at the camera

Like most college students, Abby Hill grew up with computers and technology being a big part of her life. However with both a grandma and father who taught computer classes, Hill was exposed to the inner workings of a computer and it slowly became something she grew interest in.

Hometown: Gwinner, N.D.
Graduation Year: 2026
Major: Computer Information Systems (CIS), certificates in Enterprise Applications, Customer Relationship Management, and Cybersecurity
Activities on campus: VCAB, President of the Association of Computing Machinery club (ACM), Viking Voyage Mentor, NSO mentor, Tutor, Intramural sports, Viking Catholic, Choir, Drama Club, and Green Dot.

What made you choose 91心頭利?

I chose 91心頭利 because of the incredible academic scholarship I was offered. Combined with what my parents had saved for my education, it meant I could graduate without student loans, which was a huge blessing and motivator for me.

Beyond the financial opportunity, I was drawn to the close-knit environment. I thrive in spaces Abby Hill working on a computerwhere I am not just another number. At 91心頭利, I have been able to build meaningful connections with professors and peers.

What inspired you to major in Computer Information Systems?

Growing up around technology inspired my choice to major in Computer Information Systems (CIS). My grandmother and father both taught computer classes, and that early exposure sparked my curiosity. As I grew, so did my passion for computer safety and ethical hacking.

I have always been fascinated by how technology works behind the scenes. As cyber threats continue to grow, I realized how important it is to have ethical and skilled professionals protecting individuals and businesses. Seeing how vulnerable children and families are online inspired me to create Digital Defenders, a platform focused on educating youth about cybersecurity and safe digital habits. CIS allows me to combine my analytical mindset with my heart for service.

What has been your favorite course and why?

My favorite course has been Social Implications of Computers. At first, it was intimidating to be the only female in the class, but I chose to see it as a challenge.

In class, we debated real world ethical scenarios related to technology and explored the broader impact of computing on society. For our major project, we wrote a fifteen-page research paper and delivered a twenty-to-thirty-minute presentation. I chose to research the Dark Web, where I learned about how it is accessed, the different layers within it, and how much information exists beneath the surface of what we commonly use online.

The course pushed me to think critically about the ethical and societal responsibilities that come with working in technology.

A young girl and Abby Hill smiling at the cameraCan you share a project you are proud of?

I am especially proud of my dark web research project. It challenged me academically and helped me gain a deeper understanding of cybersecurity from both a technical and ethical standpoint.

I am also proud of the leadership work I have done through ACM and my Digital Defenders initiative, where I take what I learn in the classroom and translate it into education and outreach for younger students.

How has 91心頭利s CIS program prepared you for your future career?

91心頭利’s CIS program has prepared me for my future career in many ways. Because classes are smaller, I have been able to ask questions, collaborate closely, and truly master the material. The program pushes students to think critically and solve problems independently, which is essential in cybersecurity.

The professors in the CIS department are always willing to help and often go above and beyond to teach you more when you show curiosity. That encouragement has helped me grow both technically and professionally.

How have you overcome challenges being in a male dominant degree?

Being in a male dominant field has challenged me to be confident in my abilities. Early on, I sometimes felt pressure to prove myself. Over time, I realized that competence speaks for itself.

I have focused on preparation, professionalism, and performance throughout my four years and I have learned that diversity in tech matters. I am proud to represent women in cybersecurity. My experiences in leadership and public speaking through pageantry have also helped me bring a unique perspective to the classroom.

What advice do you have for students interested in majoring in CIS?

My advice for students wanting to major in CIS is to not be intimidated. You do not have to know everything coming in, you just need to be willing to learn. Stay curious, ask questions, and practice consistently.

Technology is constantly evolving, and CIS gives you a skillset that is incredibly valuable and versatile. If you enjoy problem solving and want to make a real impact, this major opens so many doors.

Macy Fridgen, graduating with a Bachelor of Science in Human Resources with a concentration in Management, will deliver the student address at winter commencement. A transfer student-athlete from Bismarck, N.D., Fridgen has excelled during her time at 91心頭利. As she prepares to move back to her hometown, she reflects on the skills and friendships she’s built over the last two and a half years.油

What motivated you to choose Human Resources as your major?
I chose Human Resources as my major because I love to work with people. A large portion of HR is learning how to understand people, their values and their motivations. Understanding these helps businesses push employees to be their best. I want to help create workplaces where people feel supported, appreciated and able to succeed.

How has your coursework shaped your understanding of HR?
Most of my coursework focuses on people and communication. Learning how to communicate effectively across multiple platforms is a valuable skill in todays world. Working with people is part of almost any job, so learning how to collaborate with individuals of all backgrounds and personalities has been very beneficial.

Which class or project has been the most impactful for you, and why?
The class that stands out to me as the most impactful is Foundations of Leadership. Weve studied different leadership strategies and practices and learned how to apply them in real-world situations, which has helped me better understand my own leadership style and how to lead effectively.

What skills have you developed during your studies that you think will be most valuable in your career?
I have worked hard to develop my communication and people skills and Ive learned how valuable they are in any professional setting. Since almost every job involves working with others, Im excited to apply these strengths in my career after college and continue to improve them.

Have you participated in any student organizations or clubs? What was that experience like?
I was a member of the 91心頭利 Womens Volleyball team for two and a half years after transferring in as a sophomore. My time on the team helped me rediscover my love for the sport and gave me friendships and memories that I know will last long after college.

How do you balance academics with extracurricular activities or social life?
For me, I needed to learn that building connections could be just as important as academics or extracurriculars. The people you meet and the relationships you form are often what you remember most. I made it a priority to stay on top of my schoolwork so I could fully enjoy my social experiences and my sport.

How has college changed you personally or academically since your first year?
College has changed me personally by helping me build friendships and relationships that have shaped my time at 91心頭利. Im grateful for the teammates and classmates who have supported me along the way. Academically and professionally, college has also given me the chance to build valuable connections through work experiences and coursework, which have helped me grow more confident and prepared for my future.

Whats your favorite memory from college so far?
My favorite memory from college so far was our volleyball team trip to Florida my junior year. It was my first season as a Viking, and it gave me the chance to have fun with my teammates and coaches outside of the gym and really get to know them beyond volleyball.

Photo of Macy Fridgen smiling at the camera posing behind a tillWe know you interned at Alley Beans, a coffee shop in downtown Valley City. Can you walk us through a typical workday?
A typical day at Alley Beans began with working as a barista during the first part of my shift. In the afternoons, I would collaborate with the owners, complete assigned tasks, or focus on long-term projects.

What did you enjoy most about your internship?
I really enjoyed learning from the owners, as they provided valuable insights into every aspect of starting a business and the challenges that come with it. They were a wealth of knowledge and I appreciated the opportunity to learn from their experiences.

What are your career goals and how do you see that internship helping you achieve them?
I am still exploring my career path, but I am interested in finance and banking. This internship will give me valuable exposure to the business world and help me develop essential skills.

What advice do you have for someone looking for an internship?
My advice is to start early and choose something you genuinely enjoy.油There are plenty油of options available, so find one that will be interesting to you!

If you could give one piece of advice to incoming freshmen or a transfer, what would it be?
My advice would be to meet as many new people as possible. Its intimidating coming into a new place without knowing many people, if any. But everyone is in the same boat and looking for new friends, so be the person who starts the conversation.

Where do you see yourself after graduation and how has your time at 91心頭利 prepared you for the future?
After graduation, I will be moving back to Bismarck. Im actively exploring career opportunities and feel well-prepared thanks to the support and guidance Ive received from 91心頭利 faculty.

Tell us what led you to choose your major. Has your military service affected that at all?

I have been set on music education since I first joined band in sixth grade, and it hasnt changed since joining the guard. That year, in my language arts class, we had to write a future me paper and for the project, we had to pick the university we would attend and what job we wanted to do. I wrote about music education for that assignment and I haven’t changed my mind ever since that day. I have always wanted to go into education; it wasnt until that year of band that I realized I wanted to teach music.

What strategies or tools help you stay organized during busy weeks?

My outlook calendar is my best friend when it comes to staying organized during busy weeks. I have a rough sketch of my schedule in my mind, but Im always set to forget something with how busy I get. I find it best to write everything down right away so I know I won’t forget anything important. I also use a whiteboard calendar by the door of my apartment, so I see my schedule every day before I leave.

Jaydin and other student working on computer in class

What has been the most challenging part of serving while being a student?

I think the hardest part of serving while being a full-time student on campus is finding the balance. I have missed playing in the pep band for quite a few football games because of drill weekends. I have a one weekend a month commitment with the guard, so it’s hard to get out of it to participate in on and off campus events. Balance is so important, but when you get wrapped up in the busy, it can be very hard to maintain.

What kind of support does 91心頭利 offer for students in the military?

91心頭利 has a great Military Services office located on the third floor of McFarland Hall. We also just started a new club this year called Viking Student Veterans. This club is here to help with benefit registration for 91心頭利’s guard students and to be a resource for any student from any branch of the military who is looking to further their education. The club is also set up as a resource for students to get assistance from other students. It is nice to know you can reach out and get help from someone close in age, rather than talking to an adult youve never met before.

What are your plans for after graduation?

After graduation, I plan to teach high school music, specifically band. I have always thought high school band would be my place. I would love to go into a program that does field marching as well. It was something I was very involved with during my high school band career and it’s something I definitely miss.

What has been your favorite memory from 91心頭利 so far?

I dont think I can pick one single memory from my time at 91心頭利. I have loved every band concert or pep band event I have been a part of. Pep band has been my favorite because I think it has allowed all of us music kids to really be ourselves and it’s a great time for these students to show their funny sides. It’s such an amazing environment to be a part of and I love all of the memories I have made with my music friends during my time on campus.

Why did you choose to come to 91心頭利?

I chose 91心頭利 because of the environment and community I felt within my first day on campus. I first came to 91心頭利 for Ployhar Honor Band during my junior year of high school. I remember being scared to come to a new town and be on a campus I had never even heard of before, but within three hours of our rehearsal, I felt like this could be the college I go to. I remember being so excited to go home and tell my family about everything I experienced that day. I then chose to come back for Ployhar again the next year and it was then that I had made my decision to come to 91心頭利. I was 100% committed to 91心頭利 that I didnt even bother touring any other universities. As an active guard member, I could’ve been getting a free education at any South Dakota university, but why go where I am just a number, when I have made so many connections here. Being at 91心頭利, I think that I have gotten more opportunities to get the experience in my field than if I had gone to a bigger university closer to home. Thanks to 91心頭利, I have made friends and connections that will last a lifetime.

What advice would you give to another student thinking about joining the military while in school?

I would say do it! I think it is worth it to enlist in any branch of the military. The National Guard is a good option for students looking to further their education because they will pay for your education and it’s minimal commitment compared to any active-duty service where you would go live on a base. I dont think education benefits is the only positive to enlisting however. Aside from the education benefits, I have received so many positive things from the Army National Guard. Although it can be a large time commitment, I have met some amazing people and some of my closest friends.

Name: Anna Erickson
Hometown: Cooperstown, N.D.
Major/Minor: Mathematics Education major, Computer Science minor
Graduation Year:油2027

What are you involved in on campus?
I work on campus as a tutor for both mathematics and computer science, and I also serve as a Student Pathway Mentor. Beyond academics, Im involved in Drama Club and Speech, and I attend Cru and Vikes for Christ.

Being involved with extracurriculars, how do you balance your coursework while being committed to other activities?
Balancing everything can be a challenge. In addition to my on-campus jobs and activities, I do have other responsibilities back home. I help care for my younger brother who is disabled and I have four horses that I am responsible for. I have learned that organization is important. I keep a weekly running to-do list to track assignments and block out times during the week to dedicate to homework. Whenever I have the motivation or energy, I take advantage of it and油 get ahead on my work; since I also have those weeks when it is too hard to keep up. Staying flexible like this while keeping some structure helps me stay on top of everything.

What made you choose to major in math? Was there a particular class, teacher, or moment that sparked your interest?
Choosing a major was difficult because I have so many interests. Ive always been strong in math and science and while working toward my GED I realized I had a knack for algebra and calculus. That is what sparked the idea of becoming a math teacher.

When I toured 91心頭利 and spoke with the head of the math department, I felt that math education would be a good fit for me and would allow me to make a meaningful difference. At the same time, I do love psychology and I found that I enjoyed computers, so I added a minor in computer science and am considering adding in a psychology minor as well.

How do you see yourself using math in your future career?
I plan to teach high school mathematics once I graduate. Even if I later pursue counseling or programming, being highly skilled in math is an incredibly valuable strength that transfers across many fields.

What do you enjoy most about being a math major?
What I enjoy most about being a math major is showing people my homework and seeing the look of terror on their face. I have also enjoyed taking courses from Professor Benjamin Noteboom during my time here.

Whats something you wish you had known before studying math in college?
I wish I had felt more comfortable keeping my major undeclared at first so I could explore my interests more freely. I felt some pressure to choose right away and I suspect I might have started in psychology if I had taken more time. That said, I dont regret majoring in math education, I still enjoy it a lot. But Ive learned how important it is to stay open-minded in college. These years are about discovering who you are, what you enjoy and what you want your future to look like. You dont need everything figured out at the beginning; youre just here to learn about yourself.

What advice would you give to future math majors?
It will be challenging. There will be times when it will get hard and you may feel lost, but its okay. Stick together with your classmates, maybe even form a study group. The feeling of finally understanding a tough problem is incredibly rewarding; if you enjoy problem solving and are willing to work hard, youll do just fine.

Name: Alyssa Thomsen
Hometown: Valley City, N.D.
Major/Minor: Business Administration油
Graduation Year:油
2027

What are you involved in on campus?
My involvement on campus includes being a Cru leader and a student employee doing videography work with the 91心頭利 marketing department.

How has your perspective on your career changed since switching majors?
Originally coming to 91心頭利 to major in elementary education, 油I switched to a business major to pursue my personal photography business. My perspective has shifted to having a singular focus on my business over splitting my time between teaching and photography. It has made my future and perspective clearer as to where I’m supposed to be.

How did you get started in photography?
I started my photography journey as a sophomore in high school while helping create the yearbook. Starting in sports photography, I expanded to lifestyle photography and began my business adventure. After four years, my business has grown and continues to do so into something I never thought possible as a sophomore in high school.

Photo of Alyssa Thomsen smiling at the camera holding a cameraWhat has been your favorite event or moment to capture on camera?
I have an equal passion for both sports and lifestyle as they each have their own personalities that make them special to me. I love getting to capture the joy athletes experience on the court. A core memory of mine is being able to capture the Valley City Hi-Liners girl’s state basketball championship win. In the lifestyle world, I have recently gotten into the wedding department and love being a part of people’s special day. Apart from weddings, seniors are my favorite to capture and be creative with.

How do you plan to combine your business skills with your photography passion?
Getting a business degree, I hope to grow in knowledge and skill in owning my own business. Taking business classes will help me learn how to have a successful business to go along with my photography skills I already have acquired over the years.

Have you faced any challenges as the photographer “behind the camera,” and how did you overcome them?
Creating a business while still being in high school, I sometimes struggle with imposter syndrome having a successful business so young. I have learned to just believe in myself and my passion and trust that I know what I’m doing, and others will trust me too. Having others trust my skills and abilities, I need to be confident and trust in myself as much as others do.

What advice would you give to students looking to pursue creative careers alongside their academic studies?
My advice for others is to just go for it and believe in yourself. Entrepreneurship is hard and can be challenging but you have to trust in your abilities to do what you love and do it well.

Name: Dylan Kibel
Hometown: Cortez, Colo.
Major/Minor: Fisheries and Wildlife – focuses on both Fisheries and Wildlife
Graduation Year:油
2025

What are you involved in on campus?
On campus, Ive been involved in fisheries and wildlife labs, taking part in projects that deal with fish ID, habitat work, and wildlife management.

What made you choose 91心頭利?
I originally came to 91心頭利 to play baseball and even though I no longer play, I stayed because of 91心頭利’s strong Fisheries and Wildlife program, small class sizes, and hands-on field experience. Its a close-knit, supportive campus that offers great opportunities at an affordable cost.

What inspired you to choose your major? Was there a certain moment growing up or someone who inspired you?
I chose this major because Ive always had a deep connection to the outdoors. Growing up in Colorado, fishing made me curious about what goes on beneath the surface, how fish behave, how ecosystems stay balanced, and what it takes to manage those resources. That curiosity turned into wanting a career where I could be part of the conservation side of it.

Photo of Dylan Kibel fly fishing

What has been your favorite project or research experience during your internship?
My favorite experiences have been through guiding and fieldwork. Ive spent my summers guiding in Alaska and fly-fish guiding in Montana. Those jobs taught me a lot about people, professionalism, and staying sharp in the field. My biggest takeaways are that first impressions last, you get what you put in, and applying a sense of pride, and professionalism whether youre guiding clients or working with a crew.

How do you envision combining your passion for wildlife, fly fishing, and guiding into a long-term career?
Long term, I want to tie together my passion for wildlife, fisheries, and fly fishing into a career in fisheries biology or resource management, ideally somewhere in Alaska. Id love to keep guiding on the side too, its a great way to stay connected to the water and share that passion with others.

Are there certifications, skills, or experiences you hope to gain before graduating?
Before I graduate, I want to keep building my technical side, especially with electrofishing, GIS mapping, and data analysis. Im also working toward certifications like boater safety, 6pack, and possibly a captains license down the road. The more tools I have to offer a crew, the better.

How can students make the most out of their internships to benefit their future career?

For anyone going into internships, Id say make the most of every day. Be early, ask questions, and take the initiative to help out beyond whats expected. People notice effort, and the more you put into it, the more doors you open for yourself down the road. Stay connected and build as many connections as possible within this field, or whatever field youd like to be in, its a very small world.

Sarah Monilaws portraitAttending 91心頭利 has allowed Sarah Monilaws, a senior from Absaraka, N.D., an opportunity to pursue communication, marketing and digital design, all while putting those classroom skills to use in her internships.

What are you studying at 91心頭利?
Corporate communication with minors in marketing and digital design

What made you choose a communication degree?
I wanted to do something that allowed me to work closely with people and the organization I am a part of. I also knew that with a communications degree it would give me a variety of career options.

Why 91心頭利?
I chose 91心頭利 because of the atmosphere and the small campus feel. I came from a small high school and I knew I wanted to have that when I went to college. I love how everyone knows me by name and I can walk around campus and have a conversation with anyone I pass by. I also love that it is close to home and how wonderful the Valley City community is to college students.

What extracurricular activities are you involved with on campus?
I am president of 91心頭利 DECA, North Dakota Collegiate DECA vice president, a Viking Voyage mentor as well as a New Student Orientation mentor and secretary of Viking Catholic. I participate in intramural sports and was a member of the womens golf team. I have also done PA announcing for some home games. I am the student employee for the 91心頭利 marketing team and I intern with the Valley City Chamber of Commerce!

What has been your favorite memory from 91心頭利 so far?
My favorite memory from 91心頭利 so far would have to be traveling abroad the summer of 2024 and getting to visit London, Paris, Caen, Normandy, and Rouen. This trip was such a wonderful experience and I got to learn so much about WWII and all the history behind it and how it affected the whole world. Im so grateful for Steven King and the History Club for putting on the trip and I would say if you have the chance to take a trip abroad, do it!

Where is your favorite spot to be on campus and why?
I love hanging out in the bookstore talking to my two friends Jenni Richman and Todd Rogelstad. I love going in there because we always give each other grief and its always a good time joking with them.

Sarah being crowned NAM Miss North DakotaWhat are some professional experiences you’ve had at 91心頭利?
91心頭利 has opened the door for me in so many different professional aspects of my life! Throughout my time at 91心頭利 I have done a lot of career focused events and activities that have shaped me into who I am today. Some things I have done are, winning NAM Miss North Dakota 2023, completing a 10 month internship with the communications department at Noridian Healthcare Solutions, worked three years with the 91心頭利 Marketing team, attend the North Dakota Professional Communicators Conference as a key note speaker in 2025, obtain my office position for North Dakota Collegiate DECA, interning with the Valley City Area Chamber of Commerce and getting to plan events like our 2025 Community Days and Crazy Daze. I have also started competing in pageants for the Miss America Organization where I have been able to win scholarships and a top interview award!

Walk us through your typical workday.
A typical workday for me looks different than most. On days I work for the Chamber of Commerce, I spend my time coordinating and planning our upcoming events, making member spotlights, putting commercials together, and posting on our social media channels. When I work for 91心頭利, I spend a lot of my time creating content for our social media channels, interviewing students and alumni for profiles, taking photos of events on campus and I help with the technology side by updating the website and publishing stories.

Sarah and classmate standing in front of TV with presentation screen titled Connecting with Gen-ZWhat have you enjoyed most about your internships?
I love getting to work in a variety of different fields and with different organizations. I have gotten to do a little bit of everything with all sorts of different entities and it has helped me further develop my career aspirations while guiding me down the path that is best for me. All the experiences I have gained through my internships, both good and bad, have helped me grow as an individual and Im excited to see where I can take these skills after graduation in May!

Any advice for someone looking for an internship?
Step outside of your comfort zone! You never know if you will like something unless you try it and internships are the perfect place to do it! As crazy as it sounds, even a bad internship experience can be a good one because it helps you know what you dont want to do and it helps you narrow down career options if you are uncertain about what you want to do after graduation. 91心頭利 has a lot of great resources if you are looking for an internship and they are a great way to get your foot in the door!

What are your career goals and how have those internship experiences prepared you for your next chapter?
I want to continue my education and obtain my M.P.A. Once I am done with that, I would like to be a director of marketing/communications for a non-profit organization or an organization that focuses on giving back to the community. This would be best for me as it would allow me to use my creative and people skills to promote a company that is happy to give back to their community. My internships will help me achieve these goals because of the variety of tasks I was able to learn through interviews, public speaking, social media management and so much more! Im grateful for all my internships because they have truly opened a door for me and my future.

What advice do you have for someone who is thinking about coming to 91心頭利?
My advice for someone who is thinking about coming to 91心頭利 would be to do it! I have made the best friends in both the students and the staff here. Everyone wants to see you walk across the stage and find success beyond college and it shows the second you go to your first day of classes. Whether youre a first year student, online, or transfer, the Valley City community and campus will aways make you feel like youre at home.

Growing up on a farm and ranch near Kathryn, N.D., Amber Knutson learned the value of hard work, resilience and community from an early age. Her K12 years in Valley City were filled with meaningful experiences and strong connections, which made the decision to attend 91心頭利 feel like a natural next step.

Tell us a bit about how you ended up at 91心頭利.
I am originally from Kathryn, North Dakota, where I was raised on my familys farm and ranch. I attended K12 school in Valley City and thoroughly enjoyed every moment of it. When the time came to consider college and my future, I knew I wanted to stay close to home and find a smaller, tight-knit campus community. 91心頭利 instantly felt like home. The professors and peers genuinely care about you and know you by name. I loved walking to class each day and being greeted by familiar facesit truly made the experience special.

How did you decide on your major? Any key influences in your life or experiences that led you to choose your path.
I discovered my passion for marketing during my senior year of high school, which led me to pursue a degree in Business Administration with a focus in Agricultural Business and a minor in Marketing. This combination has allowed me to build a solid foundation in business while also tailoring my education to align with my personal interests and career goals.

Have you had any internships while in college?
After my sophomore year, I transitioned to online learning and moved to Fargo. That spring, I began an internship at Steffes Auctioneering. For the first six months, I worked in brand marketing, social media, communication strategy, and marketing analytics. Following that period, I accepted a full-time role in event marketing, where I managed trade show planning, merchandise ordering, and sponsorship coordination.

Any advice for those considering attending 91心頭利 as an in-person or online student?
My advice to studentswhether online or in-personis to take risks. I firmly believe, “If your dreams don’t scare you, they aren’t big enough.” Life can be uncertain, and its not always clear which path to take. The best way forward is to explore, gain experience, and build connections. College is about more than academicsits also about growth, relationships, and preparing for success. At 91心頭利, the support from professors and staff truly sets students up for a bright future.

Tell us about your new job and what it’s like to manage that while taking classes.
After gaining valuable experience in marketing, I wanted to explore another area within business administration before graduating. In May, I accepted a position at an Edward Jones Wealth Management firm in Fargo. Although I never expected to enjoy the world of finance, I took a leap of faithand Im so glad I did. My role involves preparing for client appointments and organizing key financial data and goals. I enjoy guiding clients through important milestones, from purchasing a first home to planning for retirement.

What are your dreams and ambitions beyond college?
Looking ahead, I plan to stay in Fargo and continue working at Edward Jones. My long-term goal is to obtain my Series 7 license and grow within the firm. Ultimately, my dream is to have a career Im passionate aboutone where I look forward to helping others every day.

Have you faced any challenges during your college experience? If so, how did you overcome those challenges?
Balancing full-time work with online coursework can be challenging. There are days where I work eight hours and come home to lectures, assignments, and exams. Time management has become one of the most critical skills Ive learned. Some nights I dedicate several hours to studying so I can relax the following evening. Its all about balance and discipline.

Have you had any big (or small) wins during your time at 91心頭利?
The most difficult decision I faced in college was choosing to move and switch to online learning. I loved my hometown, being involved in the community, and attending classes on campus. I worried about missing the traditional college experienceno more campus events or face-to-face interactions with professors and classmates. Despite those concerns, I knew that advancing my career, gaining real-world experience, and building professional connections would be worth it.

My greatest takeaway from 91心頭利 is the incredible relationships and memories I made. Although I only spent two years on campus, I formed friendships and connections that will last a lifetime. Im forever grateful to the people at 91心頭利 who helped shape who I am today and supported me on the path toward becoming the best version of myself.

Emma MarsingHometown: Green River, Wyo.

Expected graduation year: May 2026

Major, minor, certificates: Communications Major with a concentration in Digital Media Management and a Minor in Psychology.

Favorite spot to study: My house!

Why did you choose 91心頭利?油I chose 91心頭利 because of the various concentrations it had for Communication Majors. I was able to find a program that aligned perfectly with my career goals and allowed me to be engaged and excited about what I was learning!

What have been some of your favorite classes and why? Thus far I would say that my favorite classes have been Media Writing, Communication and AI and Communication and Interviewing. I would say that I loved these classes due to the professors and the work that was done within the classes. Since I enjoyed learning from the professors and the assignments they gave, it did not feel like “work” to me.

How do you hope to use your degree after graduation? After I graduate I am hoping to pursue a career path in Social Media Management or Public Relations.

Do you have any advice for those thinking about pursuing a degree in Communications?油This is my second time around in college and I can confidently say this department is ready to help anyone succeed with whatever they may need. The professors will always be in your corner ready to get you the knowledge you need to succeed. If there is even a slight chance that you are looking into Communications, I highly suggest that you enroll because it really is one of the best programs!

Name: Taylor Pfeifer
Hometown: Reiles Acres, N.D.

Taylor Pfeifer, a senior at Northern Cass High School, is celebrating a huge milestone in her education. While Pfeifer is leaving Northern Cass with a high school diploma, she is also leaving with her associates degree from 91心頭利! Although the journey had its ups and downs, she’s been grateful for the opportunity to jumpstart her college education.

What activities are/were you involved in during high school?

In high school I was involved with One Act, Science Olympiad, 4H (as vice president, president, and secretary), along with AIAS as a high school senior! (AIAS is the American Institute of Architecture Students at NDSU).

Did you have any mentors or teachers who were especially supportive during this time?油

Especially during my senior year, my most supportive teachers were Mr. Sitte and Mr. Krinke. They both encouraged me and kept me motivated through all the dual credit and college classes I took throughout high school, with Mr. Sitte offering me more flexibility considering my extensive workload in my senior year. Without their positivity, I wouldn’t have been able to accomplish as much as I have in my high school years!

How did you manage the workload of high school and college at the same time?油

What helped me to manage both college and high school at the same time was setting reminders for homework and errands, creating a manageable schedule for myself, and completing homework in a timely manner after its been assigned. I enjoy being a busy individual which gave me a lot of motivation to handle high school and college at the same time.

How does this achievement impact your next steps after graduation? Are you planning on continuing your education? If so, where do you intend to go and what are you going to major in?

Getting my associates degree as I graduate high school means that I have significantly less classes to take in college and gives me more time to dedicate towards my major and the projects I’m assigned. Along with the possibility of more scholarships, getting my diploma and my associates gives me massive bragging rights. Going into college I plan to attend NDSU for Architecture, where I will hopefully attend my second year as an architecture student!

What advice do you have for current high school students taking dual credit classes?油

My best advice towards anyone taking dual credit classes is to persevere through the added challenge as it will save you significant time and money! Dual credit courses will help me have a less stressful workload in college and might be easier than an equivalent class that a college offers. Take on the challenge in your high school years so your college years will be less stressful!

Grant Larson, graduating with a Bachelor of Science in Education in Elementary Education, will deliver the student address at spring commencement. Hailing from a farm near Leeds, N.D., Larson is the fourth generation in his family to pursue a career in teaching. Throughout his time at 91心頭利, Larson demonstrated a deep commitment to both his studies and his campus community.

What are some of the campus activities you were involved in? Any big accomplishments?
One thing I am especially proud of his authoring the petition for the Shooting Sports Team which is now a competitive club sport at 91心頭利. I also was the president of the 91心頭利 Trap Club, a resident assistant, member of both the fisheries and wildlife clubs, member of Chi Alpha and a New Student Orientation (NSO) Leader. One of my favorite accomplishments was being part of the team when we received the state championship at both the 2023 and 2025 North Dakota Collegiate State Trap Tournament.

Where did you do your student teaching?
Tell us about that experience.I did my student teaching at Washington Elementary here in Valley City. I was in a 6th grade science classroom with Katie Gordon as my cooperating teacher. It was an experience that taught me the value of resilience and never giving up when things get tough. It revealed to me how much of a positive impact a teacher can have on students, even in just a few short months. I aimed to have each of my lessons incorporate a real world skill so that a student could walk out with something meaningful.

What did you enjoy most about your time at 91心頭利?
I’ve enjoyed learning that there’s no need to wait for opportunities to come my way when I can create them myself!

What, or who, inspired you to go into teaching? What do you enjoy the most about the profession?
Ultimately, it was my family that inspired me to go into teaching. I will be the fourth generation in my family to do so. What I enjoy most about teaching is when I can hear students in the hallways excitedly telling their friends about the things they did in class, like aging a meteor fragment, holding an ancient Roman coin or reading a letter from a soldier who stormed the beaches of Normandy. It made the students want to come back as much as I did.

Do you have any plans set in place upon graduating?
After graduation, I will be moving to Watford City to start a job at Watford City Middle School as a 6th grade history teacher. I also plan to pursue a Masters degree in Educational Leadership in the near future.

Any last thoughts as you wrap up your time at 91心頭利?
My college journey has been more memorable and enjoyable than I wouldve thought possible; I leave feeling incredibly fortunate that I met so many good people along the way. I’d like to send a special thanks to Gannon and Breanne Larson, Katie Gordon, Dave Hanson, Dave Bass, Nick Galt, Al LaFave, Erin Klingenberg, and the friends I made along the way. My advice to fellow students would be to work as hard as you can to get the best grades possible, it will provide you with additional scholarships that can free up the funding for marvelous hunting expeditions! As I depart from 91心頭利, I think of Matthew 6:33, which says, Seek ye first the kingdom of God, and His righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you.

Are you involved in any extracurricular activities on campus?
I was on the Mens Basketball team for my first two years and a member of the Pre-Professional’s Club.

What has been your favorite memory from 91心頭利 so far?
My favorite memory from 91心頭利 was traveling to Palm Springs, Calif. with my mentor, Dr. Hilde van Gijssel, to present my research at the Environmental Mutagenesis and Genomics Societys annual conference. I also got married this year! My wife, Madi, and I met at 91心頭利 our freshman year. I proposed to her last June and we got married in March! She has been a great supporter of mine and will be a great nurse as she graduates with her RN degree this year!

Where is your favorite spot on campus and why?
My favorite spot on 91心頭利s campus is the scientific research lab on the 2nd floor of the Rhoades Science Center. I enjoy doing lab work there, as well as doing homework in the calm and quiet environment.

Why did you choose 91心頭利?|
I chose 91心頭利 because I knew that I would be able to form connections with classmates and professors that I couldnt do at larger universities.

What advice do you have for someone who is thinking about coming to 91心頭利?
My advice for future 91心頭利 students is to form a close connection with your advisor/mentor, as they do a very good job at guiding you through school as well as life!

Can you walk us through your typical workday? What does it look like? What do you do?

A typical day in my internship involves a mix of technical maintenance, research, development, and documentation, all centered around integrating VR and AR into classroom environments.

When I first arrive at the office, I start with PC maintenance. This involves checking the systems performance, ensuring all software and hardware are up to date and troubleshooting any issues that may arise. Keeping the system running smoothly is crucial, as any technical problems could slow down development and testing.

Once maintenance is complete, I shift my focus to researching and developing ways to incorporate VR and AR into educational settings. This process begins with analyzing how a particular class is structuredexamining teaching methods, course materials, and student interactions. I then begin designing and developing training software tailored to the subject matter. This step involves not only coding and building the software but also ensuring that it is engaging, interactive and user-friendly for both students and instructors.

The final stage of my day revolves around documentation. I create detailed guides on how the software operates, outlining step-by-step instructions for professors on how to integrate it into their classes. This documentation is essential for ensuring that faculty can effectively use the technology and maximize its benefits for students.

What have you enjoyed most about your internship?

What I enjoy most about my internship is that Im paving the way for a new system at 91心頭利. The CSSE Department is the first to explore how we can integrate new technology into the classroom using VR headsets. This opportunity allows me to be at the forefront of innovation, helping to shape how immersive technology can enhance learning experiences.

Along with this exciting progress, theres also the challenge of developing these programs. VR development is quite different from traditional software development, as users dont have the usual keyboards or controllers to interact with. Instead, I have to consider new ways for users to engage with the system, making interaction feel natural and intuitive. Learning to create these programs has been a complex but rewarding experience, as it pushes me to expand my skills and think outside the box.

What are your career goals, and how do you see this internship helping you achieve them?

My career goals are to hopefully stay local in North Dakota. I plan on looking to go into the government sector for a couple of years to gain experience in the workforce and from there, maybe make the jump into the private sector.

What advice do you have for someone looking for an internship?

When looking for internships, my biggest advice is to branch out and make connections. If there are any career fairs available, make sure to attend them. These events give you a chance to see what opportunities are out there and, more importantly, allow you to get your name out to potential employers.

Its also a great idea to talk to your professors. Many businesses reach out to university departments looking for interns and professors often have connections that can help you find opportunities. Meeting with them and expressing your interest can open doors you might not have known existed. Networking, being proactive and staying open to different possibilities will increase your chances of finding a great internship.

What is your current employment, education program, or passion project?

I have been teaching for West Fargo Public Schools for over 10 years. I work at Willow Park Elementary, specifically for a program called the Welcome Center. The Welcome Center is a specialized program at Willow Park Elementary designed to support students who have recently arrived in the United States and are still developing their English skills. In our program, students receive intensive, small group instruction that focuses on building language proficiency, whether its through speaking, listening, reading, or writing. But we dont just teach languageour primary goal is to ensure that every student feels safe and accepted as they begin their new life in our school and community.

What first interested you in 91心頭利? How did you decide to come here?

As I reflect on my journey in the TESOL (Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages) program at 91心頭利, I cant help but feel grateful for the decision I made to enroll. Many of my co-workers had raved about the program, speaking highly of the knowledgeable staff and the outstanding mentorship of Joan Aus, a faculty member who left a lasting impact on them. Now that Ive had the opportunity to experience it myself, I can confidently say that 91心頭利 lived up to the hypeand exceeded my expectations.

What is your current employment, education program, or passion project?

I am the owner of Wright Foot, a viral social media sock brand that specializes in puns, such as “Otter Space” “Fork Lift” and “Couch Potato.”

What first interested you in 91心頭利? How did you decide to come here?

I loved the family vibes 91心頭利 brings. I felt at home the second I stepped on campus. Both of my sisters also went to 91心頭利. The one-on-one attention was very important to me when I picked a college. I wanted to be a person, not a number.

What clubs or activities were you involved in during your time at 91心頭利?油

VCAB president, resident assistant, viking ambassador, homecoming co-chair, band, choir, pep band, university singers, quantum brass, and opera assemble.

What are some of your accomplishments?油

Making Wright Foot my full time job!

What are your interests outside of work (hobbies, volunteerism, interests, goals)?油

My goal is to launch a few more businesses in the near future. I enjoy spending all the time I can with my girlfriend, Shaniah, and my friends, a large majority that I met at 91心頭利! The lifelong friendships I made at 91心頭利 mean the WORLD to me. I also enjoy hanging out with my two cats, Pip and Sebastian, and my corgi puppy, Cooper.

What is your fondest memory of your college years?油

All the friends I made that I still see to this day. They are my closest friends. Also being in VCAB with Kari Stricklin. She taught me a lot of meaningful lessons and my favorite quote from her that I still use today is, “get comfortable with the uncomfortable.”

Any advice for current 91心頭利 students?

Soak up all the time you have there. Get involved in anything and everything you can. 91心頭利 does a fantastic job getting students ready for the real world!

What is your current employment, education program, or passion project?

I’m currently in my second year as the Superintendent of Schools for Devils Lake Public Schools (DLPS). I had previously been a high school principal for 16 years but decided it was time for a change so I jumped into superintendency. It has been a great challenge. Devils Lake has been a great move for myself and for my family. DLPS recently passed a bond referendum through a vote of the people for a $30 million dollar improvement project to our school facilities. That is first and foremost on my plate right now to improve some of the school facilities especially in the area of safety and security in the DLPS district.

What first interested you in 91心頭利? How did you decide to come here?

What brought me to 91心頭利 was its size and its people. I was recruited by Jim Dew to come and play football there but honestly it was the people I met on my campus tour that sold me.

What clubs or activities were you involved in during your time at 91心頭利?油

Football, student government, and resident assistant

What are some of your accomplishments?油

My son, Jackson, is working on his pilot’s license with a dream of flying for a career one day. My son, Noah, already runs his own business (Clooten Films) as a high school student and is very successful in doing so. My daughter, Ella, is a caring and loving freshman at DLHS that is active in leadership as well as volleyball and track.

What are your interests outside of work (hobbies, volunteerism, interests, goals)?油

I love spending time with my family as well as outdoor activities like hunting and fishing, especially when they involve time with family and friends. The activities are great but the memories with the people you cherish is the true treasure. I play bass guitar on the worship team at my church and volunteer with some service organizations and boards in the Devils Lake area as well.

What is your fondest memory of your college years?油

My fondest memory would have to be meeting the love of my life Valerie (Buchholz) Clooten and being featured on Dr. Stickler’s bulletin board with her on the 3rd floor of the science building. We just celebrated 25 years of marriage and look back on our time at 91心頭利 very fondly!

Any advice for current 91心頭利 students?

Enjoy your time there! Invest in the community, don’t just sit in your dorm room. Once I became more active in the Valley City community my college experience became so much richer!

Degree earned from 91心頭利: Elementary Education

What is your current employment?
5th grade teacher, Bismarck Public Schools
Member of my schools leadership team
MTSS B Committee Co-Lead
Student Ambassadors Co-Advisor

What first interested you in 91心頭利 and how did you decide to attend?
I always knew I wanted to go to the BEST teacher college so it was never a question of where to go! I toured 91心頭利 with my family on a Viking Visit Day and felt that home-like feeling I knew I would need to succeed. Mrs. Cindy Zahn was beyond welcoming as my advisor on that day and she connected my family so well to the whole experience being I was the first one in my family to attend college.

What clubs or activities were you involved in during your time at 91心頭利?
During my time at 91心頭利, I was a Viking Ambassador. I enjoyed connecting with prospective new students and sharing all the wonderful qualities of campus with them and their families.

What are some of your accomplishments since completing your degree?
I graduated from UND in December 2023 with a Masters Degree in Educational Administration. Currently I am taking a course to become a student-teacher supervising teacher.

What are your interests outside of work?
Outside of work, I enjoy spending time on my family’s ranch where we have many animals! My brother rides bucking bulls professionally, so I also like to road-trip to rodeos to watch his success. Any country music concert I can attend, I do! I enjoy reading, as I set a “books read” goal each year and typically beat it. In the summer months, when I’m not teaching summer school, I enjoy lounging in my family’s pool, soaking up the sunshine!

What is your fondest memory of your college years?
My fondest memory of my college years connects to all the valuable friendships I made. I am still in contact with many friends from my college years. We dedicate time almost monthly to meet up and connect. I also still communicate with many of my professors from 91心頭利. They’re always willing to help with any professional career questions I may have. Mrs. Cindy Zahn has become a 2nd mom to me and I enjoy spending time with her a couple times a year, no matter the distance we have to travel!

Do you have any advice for current 91心頭利 students?
My advice for current 91心頭利 students would be to enjoy every moment! It certainly goes by faster than you think. Even the stressful moments will be ones you look back on someday and smile (or even laugh) at! Once a Viking, Always a Viking!

Grace Mueller is getting ready for her future in writing through an internship here in Valley City. Mueller is excited to work on projects and learn skills that she can take with her on her next journey after graduation.

Hometown: Wimbledon, N.D.
Year: Senior
Major/Minor: English with a music minor
Activities on campus: President of English Club, President of Spanish Club, Student Senate CALLS representative, NSLS, Viking Voyage mentor, Social Justice Council, Young Democrats, and Sigma Tau Delta.

About Grace’s spring internship:油

I will be working alongside 91心頭利 alumni, Emma Tufte, at City County Health to learn about and begin grant writing. A few different projects I’ll tackle include, evaluating technical writing and rewriting in plain language to share with the public (particularly for City County Health’s website and programming) as well as contributing to a huge grant writing project for the School of Nutrition.

Future plans after graduation:油

After graduation, I hope to use my grant writing abilities and other special skills from 91心頭利 to continue grant writing for non-profits in Billings, Montana.

How has your minor helped you?油

My music minor has helped me grow especially in soft skills such as creative processing, public speaking, and performance. As well as building a work ethic to engage with topics which I had little to no prior knowledge.

What has been your favorite memory from 91心頭利?油

Many of my favorite memories at 91心頭利 I’m lucky to have experienced recurrently, such as playing in music practices and concerts, enjoying events put on by various 91心頭利 organizations, and learning with (and often joking with) my faculty, staff, and peers.
