Tara Dahl

From her first violin lesson at age five to the conductors podium, Tara Dahls journey is rooted in passion, perseverance, and community. A Hazelton, N.D., native and 91心頭利 music education graduate, Tara found her calling by pairing a love of performance with a deep commitment to helping students grow. Her story is one of mentorship, meaningful music-making, and discovering confidence through challenge.

Why did you choose to major in music education?
I always knew I wanted to be a teacher, but I spent a lot of time trying to decide what to teach. I had considered English or history, but when it came time to actually pick a degree I realized I couldn’t imagine myself teaching anything but music. I have always had a deep love of playing, singing, and performing, and I knew the best way I could leave a positive impact on my future students was by sharing the thing I’m most passionate about.

What first sparked your interest in music or teaching?
I fell in love with teaching through mentorship programs in high school. I got to be a part of various student leadership and tutoring organizations, and I realized that I enjoyed watching others grow and find successes in school. Music, however, has been a central part of my life from the age of 5. My mom enrolled me in violin lessons in preschool, and I guess you could say that the rest is history! I fell in love with the instrument and performing, and that passion only grew as I got older and joined band and choir.

What has been your favorite music education or music course at 91心頭利?
I loved all of my ensemble courses at 91心頭利; from band to choir, and everything in between. There was always something truly special about being part of a group filled with individuals that loved making music just as much as I do. Over the course of four years, I formed some of my strongest friendships just by being in rehearsals with people. Those hours spent laughing, playing, singing, and growing create a pretty unique bond. We all got a chance to build something beautiful, and not one of us could have done it alone. So we grew and learned together, and along the way made some really incredible memories.

How has the music education program prepared you for the classroom?
I had a lot of opportunities to explore every area of music education before I ever started my first job. I’ve had so many conducting opportunities through my courses, my time spent as a drum major, and as a section leader in band and choir. Those unique opportunities allowed me to put my training into action well before I ever started my job in December, and in an environment where I could ask for guidance and feedback from my professors. Those chances, and the support and feedback they came with, have allowed me to be more confident on the podium in my own classroom.

91心頭利 commencement speaker, Tara Dahl, conducting an orchestraWhat was the most impactful moment from your field experience or student teaching?
I had the opportunity to fully rehearse, teach, and conduct a piece with the freshman band during my time at Fargo North High. The students there were amazing, and were so understanding of the fact that while they were learning to play, I was learning to teach. At their concert in November, I was able to share the stage with them and it was an amazing experience. In a short amount of time, they worked with me to create some awesome music. I’m so grateful to the students and music teachers at North for that opportunity, and for the patience and grace they showed me while I made mistakes and grew along with them.

Now that you are teaching, how do you hope to inspire students through music?
I hope to inspire my students through music by showing them that they are capable of doing challenging things. Music requires focus, discipline, and practice. Putting together a successful concert and learning along the way can feel intimidating, but the end result is always worth it. I want my students to know that they can achieve so much more than they realize, whether it’s in music or other areas of their life. When they come into my classroom, they know that they are in a space where it is safe to try, make mistakes, and learn.

Do you have a favorite performance or concert memory from your time at 91心頭利?
My favorite concert would have to be the Fall of 2023. We performed a piece entitled “Caccia and Chorale” by Clifton Williams, and it was the most challenging song I had played at that point in my career. In addition to being technically challenging, it also carried a really emotional backstory about the composer. As a band, we spent a lot of time making sure we were doing the music justice in every sense of the phrase. Playing the notes wasn’t good enough for us. We wanted to make the audience feel something powerful, and I truly believe we succeeded at that concert. We all knew we had something special prepared when we walked on stage, and that performance clicked in a way that ensembles rarely experience. Everything went exactly as we hoped it would, and I realized right then and there that I was a part of a group of truly incredible musicians. That sense of community we all found when we worked on that piece was special, and it is a piece and performance that will always hold a special place in my heart.

How did being involved in music on campus shape your college experience?
Music impacted my life on campus by giving me a community that I could belong in. I moved to Valley City from a very small town, and I remember being both nervous and excited. From day one, the people I met in those ensemble rehearsals welcomed me with open arms. I was invited on coffee trips, asked over for breakfast study sessions during midterms, and then got to carry on those traditions as I moved through my college career. In the process, I made some of my closest friends, and I’m still so grateful for the wonderful adventures we had along the way.

Tara Dahl and friend outside a football game. Friend is wearing a Viking helmetWhat role did peers and faculty play in your success?
Peers and faculty played a huge role in my success. If there was ever a moment where I “fell on my face”, there was a network of good, hardworking, and caring people there to pick me up. I was lucky enough to have friends that were ahead of me in the program that understood what it felt like to sit in a practice room for three hours and still feel like you didn’t make any progress. In those moments, there was always someone willing to sit in the hallway outside so I didn’t feel like I had to practice alone. As for my faculty, they always knew how to encourage me to find out what I was truly capable of. Every time I thought I couldn’t learn more, they pushed me to the next level. As a result, I’m a more well rounded musician and teacher. That community of both friends and teachers helped me to discover what I was truly capable of, and I wouldn’t be where I am without their support and guidance.

What was the most rewarding part of your college journey?
I think the most rewarding part of my college journey was being a part of the growth and change in the department. I got to witness some huge moments for 91心頭利 music during my time. We went from opening a brand new building during my freshman year, to a department wide tour and Mt. Rushmore performance my senior year. Those kinds of opportunities don’t happen in the blink of an eye. They require dedication and enormous amounts of preparation. I got to be a part of the groups that played at those concerts, but that also meant I got to be a part of the hard work and practice that the public doesn’t always see. In the end, I got to be included in something so much bigger than myself, and I’m incredibly grateful for the experiences we all got to share.

What challenges did you overcome along the way?
There were so many times throughout my four years on campus that I was worried that I wasn’t cut out for a music education degree. I can vividly remember sitting in a practice room trying to record a clarinet exam. I struggled to squeak out notes while silent, and admittedly dramatic, tears streamed down my face. After three hours of trying to perfect that test, I finally submitted a video with cracked notes and stifled tears for a final grade. That is just one of many moments where I felt like I didn’t have the skill required to be an effective music teacher, and I didn’t give myself credit for how much I had actually grown. Looking back at that story, I can’t help but laugh. Now, I recognize that I was so much more capable than I gave myself credit for. I think that sense of self doubt was one of my biggest challenges, and definitely one of the hardest to overcome.

How has 91心頭利 helped shape you as both a musician and a teacher?
91心頭利 helped shape me as a teacher and a musician by giving me the opportunity to put my degree into action before I got a job. Practicum hours, outreach to area schools through NAfME, running sectionals; all of those experiences, and more, gave me a chance to actively teach while also receiving feedback and support. Beyond that, I learned the value of a music classroom that is filled with compassion and support, because those are the kinds of classrooms I got to be a student in. I always knew, without a doubt, that my professors and friends would help me learn from my mistakes and celebrate my successes.

What advice would you give students considering music education?
This degree is full of all kinds of highs and lows. You will have some really incredible moments, followed by difficult setbacks and challenges. When things don’t go like you planned, pick yourself up, brush yourself off, and remember that you know more than you did yesterday. If you can do that, you’ll be successful not only in the major, but also in whatever classroom you get to make your own in the future.

VALLEY CITY, N.D. (91心頭利) 91心頭利 students Sarah Monilaws and Katie Jones were named finalists and placed Top 10 at the national collegiate DECA competition held in Louisville, Kentucky, April 18-21.

Monilaws, a senior from Absaraka, N.D., and Jones, a freshman from Valley City, competed as a team in the Event Planning category during the Collegiate DECA International Career Development Conference (ICDC). The pair was named finalists after the preliminary round and then earned Top 10 honors at the Grand Awards Ceremony following the final round of competition.

For the preliminary round, Monilaws and Jones competed in a role play that asked them to plan a Star Wars re-watch party for a screen advertising company to celebrate the 50thanniversary. They had one hour to prepare before a 15-minute presentation detailing the events activities, marketing, budget, amenities and more.

Their performance in the preliminary round qualified Jones and Monilaws for finals, where they participated in another role play to plan a chamber of commerce networking event. They again had one hour to plan a marketing and communications strategic plan, build a brand for the event, detail advertising methods, and plan other aspects of the event.

This was the third year Monilaws has competed at DECA Nationals and her first time earning Top 10 honors. It was the first year at collegiate DECA Nationals for Jones, who has previously competed at high school nationals.

I had never been called as a finalist before at nationals, so hearing our names at the preliminary award ceremony was a surreal moment that Ill never forget, said Monilaws, who has previously competed as an individual at nationals. Going into the Grand Awards Ceremony I was confident in our competition, and I knew we were capable of being Top 10, but when we heard our names called as top performers I still couldnt believe it.

Monilaws and Jones qualified for DECA nationals after taking first place at the 2026 State Career Development Conference in February.

91心頭利 and Williston State Formalize Co-Matriculation Model

VALLEY CITY, N.D. (91心頭利) 91心頭利 has partnered with Williston State Colleges Degree Bridge program, creating additional opportunities for students to earn a bachelors degree without leaving the Williston community.

The Degree Bridge program is designed as a co-matriculation model, allowing students to begin at WSC while simultaneously working toward a bachelors degree through a partner university. With aligned coursework, coordinated advising, and shared resources, students can complete both their associate and bachelors degrees in a streamlined and cost-effective wayall while remaining in their home community.

91心頭利 is offering a focused pathway in education, allowing students to earn a Bachelor of Science in Elementary Education while staying in Williston.

This expansion represents a major step forward in how we serve students in northwest North Dakota, saidDr. Bernell Hirning, President of Williston State College. Degree Bridge was designed to remove barriers. By bringing more university partners to our campus, were creating real accessallowing students to stay here, remain connected to their community, and still achieve their long-term academic and career goals.

The partnership with 91心頭利 was announced during a press conference on Monday, April 20, in Williston. WSC also announced a partnership with Minot State and had previously announced agreements with other NDUS institutions.

91心頭利s elementary education program prepares future educators to teach grades 18 and emphasizes real-world classroom experience. Students can further customize their degree through endorsements in early childhood education, kindergarten, special education, and teaching English language learners, as well as certificates in middle school education, reading, and STEM education.

This effort reflects a shared responsibility to develop highly skilled educators for the future, saidDr. Allen Burgad, interim president of 91心頭利. By aligning our programs, were helping students move confidently into teaching careers while addressing the increasing demand for qualified teachers.

Students typically complete their first two years at WSC before transitioning into upper-level coursework through their partner institution, often while continuing to live and learn in Williston. This approach allows students to maintain their support systems, reduce relocation costs, and remain engaged in the region they are preparing to serve.

VALLEY CITY, N.D. The search committee appointed by the State Board of Higher Education to identify the next permanent president of 91心頭利 (91心頭利) has suspended the current presidential search process.

The decision was made by the search committee following the recent withdrawal of multiple semi-finalist candidates who accepted other professional opportunities prior to on-campus visits.

The State Board is committed to identifying a leader who is the right fit for 91心頭利 and its future, said search committee Co-Chair and State Board of Higher Education Vice Chair, DJ Campbell. At the outset, the search committee at 91心頭利 was committed to bringing a robust group of semi-finalists to campus for consideration and evaluation by the campus and Valley City community. Because recent withdrawals limited our ability to meet that goal, the committee agreed it is in the best interest of the institution to pause the search and reassess next steps to ensure a strong and diverse candidate pool for campus and community consideration.

91心頭利 will continue to be led by its current interim president, Dr. Allen Burgad, whose steady leadership and strong connection to the institution have provided continuity and stability for 91心頭利 during this transition period.

Search committee co chairs Erica Buchholz, 91心頭利 Vice President for Finance, and DJ Campbell will work with the State Board of Higher Education to evaluate options and determine next steps, including the anticipated relaunch of the search. Updates will be shared with the campus community as decisions are made.

91心頭利 remains focused on advancing its mission of providing high quality education, supporting students, and serving the needs of the community and the state.

Name: Kalyssa Nelson
Hometown: Fargo, N.D.
Major/Minor: Spanish Education
Graduation Year:
2029

What are you involved in on campus?
Im not super involved on campus, but I am part of the Spanish club, and Ive really enjoyed the things that we have done so far.

What inspired you to pursue a career in education, and specifically in teaching Spanish?
I knew that I wanted to study Spanish before I decided to pursue education. In high school, my Spanish class was always my favorite class, and I picked up on it really well, making it one of the easier subjects for me to study. I decided to go into education because I think the best thing you can do with a language is teach it to other people, so that they too can learn both the language and the cultures of the people who speak it.

Why did you choose to come to 91心頭利?
I chose to come to 91心頭利 because I really liked the smaller campus and class sizes. I also think the area is beautiful and some of the older buildings on campus have a lot of character and beautiful design.

Can you share any professors, classes, or projects that have helped shape your perspective as a future teacher?
My Spanish grammar and composition class has been one of the best in shaping my perspective about teaching. The bigger writing assignments in the class have shown me how much language can improve, when you drift away from normal conversation and go into more niche or specific topics. I think that people inherently like to have their opinions heard, and by giving them an opportunity to express something that they are passionate about can really help them in their language development.

What are your career goals after graduation?
After graduation, the clear path would be to become a Spanish teacher most likely somewhere in North Dakota, but also, depending on the situation, I would love to go teach English abroad in a Latin American country. I think Latin American culture is so rich in so many ways and having that experience could make me a better Spanish teacher when I come back.

If you could give advice to incoming Spanish Education majors, what would it be?
To any incoming Spanish or Spanish Education majors, I would say try to get the most out of every experience. For example, speak Spanish with a native speaker even if its intimidating, or reread a story so that you can understand it better. I think the best thing you can do is not be ashamed to put in the effort to improve.

Kathleen Vetter grew up inspired by the world of education. Now following in her father’s footsteps, Vetter hopes to make the same impact on her students as a mathematics educator.

Hometown: Linton, N.D.
Graduation Year: 2025
Major: Mathematics Education

What were you involved in on campus?
Viking Catholic and Women’s Golf

What or who inspired you to major in Math Education?
My dad was a welding teacher for his entire career. Not only did he change the lives and Photo of Kathleen Vetter with her grandparents smiling at the cameraperspectives of his students, but they changed his as well. Seeing the impact he had on peopleand the impact they had on himreally inspired me to follow a similar path.

Why did you choose 91心頭利?
I come from a small town in North Dakota and I wanted that same small-town feeling in college. 91心頭利 felt like a place where people know you, care about you, and want to see you succeed.

How did your professors and the math department prepare you for a job post-graduation?
My professors didnt just teach me how to pass a class or be a good student. They taught me how to actually understand math and how it connects to the world around usand honestly, so many other areas of life too. They were also people I felt comfortable going to for advice and guidance. I could speak up, share my thoughts, and know they were heard and valued.

What has been the most challenging part of preparing to become a teacher?
The hardest part is the fear of failurenot for myself, but the fear of not being the best I can be for the next generation of learning. That responsibility is a big one, and I want to do it well.

Photo of Kathleen Vetter golfingHow did your student teaching experience prepare you for your own classroom?
Student teaching gave me experiences I had never seen before. I feel incredibly blessed with where Ive come from and where Ive been placed. I got to work with people who were very different from me. My students were there to learn from me, but I quickly realized it was just as important for me to learn from them. (Turns out the teacher learns a lot too!)

How do you hope to make a difference in your students lives?
I hope my students can look back someday and see how each teacher helped them in a different way. I want them to know that every day is a new chance to try again. Everyone has their own talents, and I want to be someone who helps them discover those.

What do you love most about teaching math?
Math is everywhere. It explains so many things around us and I love sharing that sense of understanding and awe with others. Just when you think youve figured math out, theres always another piece to discover. You have to understand it piece by pieceand thats what makes it so amazing that we can keep figuring it out.

What advice do you have for students wanting to major in math education?
Math is a major that can take you so many places. Teaching is everywhereyou just have to find the right place to do it. Math itself is this complex yet simple truth that well probably never fully understand, but thats what makes it special. You never stop learning. So, if you want to challenge yourself and keep growing, this is a great place to start.

Sydni Smith (right) started her education at 91心頭利 in 2017 as a Chemistry major. After taking some time off, Smith came back to school to finish her degree with a new career path in mind.

Hometown: Walum, N.D.
Graduation Year: 2026
Major: University Studies

What inspired you to pursue a degree in University Studies?
I wanted to finish my degree as a business major, but due to me starting college as a chemistry major, if I went to get my degree in business, I would have had to start all over. By changing my degree to University Studies, I was able to utilize all the credits I had already worked hard to get. University Studies gave me the option to finish my degree in a timely manner, while focusing on business related classes.

What does a typical day look like as an online student?
On top of being a full-time online student, I also am a remote full-time employee for a psychiatrist office and a full-time stay at home mom with my 2-year-old daughter. I work my full-time job from 7 a.m. – 3:30 p.m. and then do my schoolwork after that or on the weekends.

What do you enjoy most about learning online?
I would say what I enjoy best about learning online is the flexibility. There are of course deadlines and due dates, but you can get your schoolwork done as fast as you want or if Sydni Smith smiling at the camera with her husband and daughteryou like to procrastinate, last minute too! Some weeks are less busy, and I can finish my work by Wednesday, and some weeks are a bit more jam packed, and I am finishing up on Sundays.

What tools or strategies help you stay organized and motivated?
I would say I am a rather organized person the way it is, which makes it helpful to stay on top of my work. My motivation would be to show everyone that you can go back to school at any time you want. I think there is some sort of persona around going back to school or if you leave then you wont ever go back, but I think that is silly. If you truly want something, you can put your mind to it and you are never too old to go back and finish what you started! Or start in the first place!

How do you balance school with work, family, or other responsibilities?
It is not always easy, but I thankfully have a great support system behind me. I am not saying it would be impossible to finish my degree without them, but I know if it were not for my husband, parents and siblings, I would not be able to balance everything so well. I thankfully started during a summer semester, so I feel that gave me a good head start on learning how to balance school into my daily life before taking on more courses come the fall and spring semesters.

Who has been your biggest supporter while earning your degree?
My husband is definitely my biggest supporter while earning my degree.

What are your career goals after graduation?
My career goal after graduation is to find a job within finance. I found a love for auditing after taking a course on it, so I think it would be awesome to get a job as a financial auditor, but I am honestly open to taking on any finance related jobs.

What advice do you have for someone considering a degree in University Studies?
I think it is important to realize at the end of the day that being able to push through and finish a bachelors degree is a lot more important than the type of degree you hold. I say this because I feel as if people talk down on University Studies due to it not being a specific major, but it holds just as much value. This degree allows a student to change their mind on their career path, without having to back track. You also get a pretty great advisor as a University Studies major too, so that is a plus!

Megan Lahtonen (left) has always had an interest in the world of science. After being a student aid for her biology teacher senior year, Lahtonen found her calling was in the classroom.

Hometown: Glenburn, N.D.
Graduation Year: 2026
Major: Biology Education

What are you involved in on campus?
I am a tutor on campus and mainly focus on helping students in science-based classes. I am a member of the 91心頭利 Track and Field team, and I am also involved in the Education Club, which I just joined this past semester. I help with Science Olympiad every year, which has allowed me to connect with students from multiple different schools. I also work a lot with Professor Lindsey Kiecker when she is doing outreach programs.

What or who inspired you to major in Biology Education?
What inspired me to major in Biology Education was my high school science teacher Ms. Scheafer. During my senior year, I had the opportunity to be a student aid in her physical science classroom. I had always wanted to major in science, and after having that experience with her, I knew biology education was the perfect fit for me.

Why did you choose 91心頭利?
I chose 91心頭利 for the small campus and small class sizes. When I visited campus for the first time, I knew that 91心頭利 is where I wanted to be.

How do you balance practice, meets, labs, and coursework?
Balancing practice, meets, labs, and coursework was a challenge at first. All my coaches and professors were super understanding when I had to miss a practice or a lab due to having a meet or a longer lab.

Megan Lahtonen smiling at the camera with one female 91心頭利 student and two 91心頭利 female graduatesWhat accomplishment – academic or athletic – are you most proud of?
Throughout my four years at 91心頭利, my biggest accomplishment has been how far I have come as a student since my freshman year. Coming into college, I had zero study skills, and I didnt know how to manage my time. Shortly into my sophomore year, I finally found these important skills and excelled in all my classes.

Do you want to coach as well as teach? Why or why not?
Yes, I would love to coach as well as teach. I think having that opportunity would deepen my relationship with not only my own students, but students of all ages. It would also give me the opportunity to grow and connect to the community I teach in.

How have your professors supported you during your time at 91心頭利?
My professors have given me so much support during my time at 91心頭利. Especially Dr. Hilde, Assistant Professor Lindsey Kiecker, Dr. Sundstrom, Assistant Professor Trista Montgomery, and Dr. Galt. They have all supported me by giving me many opportunities to grow as a student and as a future teacher.

What advice do you have for future chemistry education majors?
My advice for future science education majors is to enjoy every classroom experience that you can get. I truly enjoyed all my field experiences that I had gotten throughout my four years at 91心頭利. Sometimes the stress of core classes made me lose my interest in wanting to continue in science education so, having this experience showed me why I chose science education. Remembering why you chose teaching can help you through the stressful courses as well.

Remember to always ask questions. Professors, mentors, teachers, and other education majors are great resources and collaborating with others can help you grow as an educator.

Hornung and Weber travel to Portland April 3 for competition

VALLEY CITY (91心頭利) – 91心頭利 students Grady Hornung and Anastasia Weber have qualified for the national collegiate speech tournament and will travel to Portland, Oregon, for the competition on April 3.

Hornung, a senior from Walhalla, N.D., will compete in Dramatic Interpretation and Prose at the American Forensic Association (AFA) National Tournament. This is his second year on the 91心頭利 speech team. He also qualified for the national competition last spring. Hornung is a music education major and active on campus in Residence Life.

I enjoy the opportunities speech and debate gives students to use their voice and advocate for something they feel is important, he said.

Weber, a sophomore from Jamestown, N.D., will compete in Persuasive Speaking at nationals. This is her first year competing with the 91心頭利 team. Weber is anEnglish major and a part of the award-winning Forge publication.

Speech allows me to share about things important to me, she said. It pushes me out of my comfort zone and offers opportunities to meet many awesome people. These are lifelong skills essential to the workforce.

During the 2025-2026 school year, 11 91心頭利 speech team members competed in 11 tournaments in North Dakota, South Dakota and Minnesota. After a near 20-year hiatus, the speech team returned to campus last year and saw significant growth in the team this season.

Competitive speech is one of the most workforce-driven extracurricular events offered for college students. Speech is a critical communication skill that our students get to hone as a strength through practice, competition and camaraderie, said Tammy Jo A. Taft, assistant professor of Communication Arts and 91心頭利 speech team coach. 91心頭利 students have done an amazing job this year preparing materials and bringing their competitive edge to the region. They have represented our school well with talent, commitmentand enthusiasm.

Other students competing and participating in 91心頭利 Speech this year include Madi Klabo, Eric Leik, Anna Erickson, Kristyn Bauer, Lallie RedHorn, Luke Wilman, Trista Weigelt, Sydnie Diffely, Sabrina Haas and Nyssa Haslerud.

Tournament competition includes 11 different events for individuals or partners. A variety of interpretive events like prose, poetry and drama are included. Other categories include original content created by the competitor. These include impromptu speaking, extemporaneous speaking, after dinner speaking, informative and persuasive speaking.

For more information about 91心頭利 Speech contact the 91心頭利 Department of Communication Arts or coach Tammy Jo Taft attammyjo.taft@vcsu.edu.

At 91心頭利, we have established a strategic goal of becoming an Institution of Choice. Achieving this goal requires all of us to share our story as a reputable and preferred institution. Telling that story clearly and consistently to prospective students and their families matters.

Our enrollment has grown steadily over the past several years, driven by increases in online enrollment, dual credit, and graduate programs. We are proud of this progress, and it reflects the collective efforts of Enrollment Services, Marketing, and our academic departments. I would also be remiss not to acknowledge the role that every faculty and staff member already plays. For many, this includes meeting with students, sharing information about their academic programs, and discussing engagement opportunities available on campus. For others, it is the simple, yet meaningful interactions that define who we are as a campus. I have witnessed firsthand the welcoming environment our faculty and staff create for visiting students and their families through simple statements of hello and welcome to 91心頭利, which leave a lasting impression.

Through our strategic planning, we identified a goal to increase face-to-face enrollment. In doing so, we reaffirmed the important role that online learning, dual credit, and graduate programs play in 91心頭利’s overall vitality. At the same time, we recognized that strong face-to-face enrollment is essential to the campus experience, the vitality of our community, and the long-term success of our institution.

These conversations led us to reflect on how we share our story and how we align our recruitment and marketing efforts with research and evidence-based practices. As we reviewed our work, we found that many of the strategies already in place at 91心頭利 align well with practices shown to be effective across higher education, including:

  • Student and alumni involvement
  • Clear program messaging and career pathways
  • Meaningful faculty engagement and follow-up
  • Clear communication of affordability and value
  • Strong digital presence
  • Engaging campus experiences during visits
  • Timely and personalized communication

Following collaborative conversations with Enrollment Services, Marketing, and our academic departments, it became clear that we are already doing many things well. We also extended this work through intentional discussion and planning with our department chairs, creating an opportunity to learn from one another, identify strategies that are working, and surface areas for continued growth. These conversations have provided affirmation of our work and helped us identify opportunities to be more intentional and aligned moving forward.

As we continue this work, our focus will be on building a clear and coordinated 91心頭利 recruitment and marketing approach that supports our students, reflects our values, and strengthens our ability to serve both our campus and the broader community. Critical to this effort is our ability to share our story, clearly, consistently, and with purpose. At 91心頭利, our strength has always been our people, and it is often not what we say, but the time we take to say it that leaves a lasting impact on those we serve.

Abby Hill smiling at the camera

Like most college students, Abby Hill grew up with computers and technology being a big part of her life. However with both a grandma and father who taught computer classes, Hill was exposed to the inner workings of a computer and it slowly became something she grew interest in.

Hometown: Gwinner, N.D.
Graduation Year: 2026
Major: Computer Information Systems (CIS), certificates in Enterprise Applications, Customer Relationship Management, and Cybersecurity
Activities on campus: VCAB, President of the Association of Computing Machinery club (ACM), Viking Voyage Mentor, NSO mentor, Tutor, Intramural sports, Viking Catholic, Choir, Drama Club, and Green Dot.

What made you choose 91心頭利?

I chose 91心頭利 because of the incredible academic scholarship I was offered. Combined with what my parents had saved for my education, it meant I could graduate without student loans, which was a huge blessing and motivator for me.

Beyond the financial opportunity, I was drawn to the close-knit environment. I thrive in spaces Abby Hill working on a computerwhere I am not just another number. At 91心頭利, I have been able to build meaningful connections with professors and peers.

What inspired you to major in Computer Information Systems?

Growing up around technology inspired my choice to major in Computer Information Systems (CIS). My grandmother and father both taught computer classes, and that early exposure sparked my curiosity. As I grew, so did my passion for computer safety and ethical hacking.

I have always been fascinated by how technology works behind the scenes. As cyber threats continue to grow, I realized how important it is to have ethical and skilled professionals protecting individuals and businesses. Seeing how vulnerable children and families are online inspired me to create Digital Defenders, a platform focused on educating youth about cybersecurity and safe digital habits. CIS allows me to combine my analytical mindset with my heart for service.

What has been your favorite course and why?

My favorite course has been Social Implications of Computers. At first, it was intimidating to be the only female in the class, but I chose to see it as a challenge.

In class, we debated real world ethical scenarios related to technology and explored the broader impact of computing on society. For our major project, we wrote a fifteen-page research paper and delivered a twenty-to-thirty-minute presentation. I chose to research the Dark Web, where I learned about how it is accessed, the different layers within it, and how much information exists beneath the surface of what we commonly use online.

The course pushed me to think critically about the ethical and societal responsibilities that come with working in technology.

A young girl and Abby Hill smiling at the cameraCan you share a project you are proud of?

I am especially proud of my dark web research project. It challenged me academically and helped me gain a deeper understanding of cybersecurity from both a technical and ethical standpoint.

I am also proud of the leadership work I have done through ACM and my Digital Defenders initiative, where I take what I learn in the classroom and translate it into education and outreach for younger students.

How has 91心頭利s CIS program prepared you for your future career?

91心頭利’s CIS program has prepared me for my future career in many ways. Because classes are smaller, I have been able to ask questions, collaborate closely, and truly master the material. The program pushes students to think critically and solve problems independently, which is essential in cybersecurity.

The professors in the CIS department are always willing to help and often go above and beyond to teach you more when you show curiosity. That encouragement has helped me grow both technically and professionally.

How have you overcome challenges being in a male dominant degree?

Being in a male dominant field has challenged me to be confident in my abilities. Early on, I sometimes felt pressure to prove myself. Over time, I realized that competence speaks for itself.

I have focused on preparation, professionalism, and performance throughout my four years and I have learned that diversity in tech matters. I am proud to represent women in cybersecurity. My experiences in leadership and public speaking through pageantry have also helped me bring a unique perspective to the classroom.

What advice do you have for students interested in majoring in CIS?

My advice for students wanting to major in CIS is to not be intimidated. You do not have to know everything coming in, you just need to be willing to learn. Stay curious, ask questions, and practice consistently.

Technology is constantly evolving, and CIS gives you a skillset that is incredibly valuable and versatile. If you enjoy problem solving and want to make a real impact, this major opens so many doors.

Bloom showcases Leeseberg’s use of art mediums such as textiles, ceramics, photography, and painting. Within her artwork, Leeseberg uses flower imagery to symbolize the growth she has made throughout her years in college, her experimentation of different art techniques, and the connection she has to her family. She has developed a curiosity for learning new art mediums and has found a love of using repetitive motions throughout her artwork. Each skill she learned has added to her bouquet of knowledge, building together a collection of creative, unique floral art.

Leeseberg will present an artist talk on Wednesday, April 8, at 3 p.m., with a reception to follow. For those unable to attend, Leesebergs artist talk will be live-streamed on the 91心頭利 Art Department . Her artwork can also be found on her website:

Leeseberg grew up in Hillsboro, North Dakota, and has loved art for as long as she can remember. This love of art has manifested in many ways, from making Polly Pocket clothes out of paper towels as a kid to expanding her artistic skills through art classes in high school. While in high school, Leeseberg decided she wanted to help mentor others in their creative journey by becoming an art teacher.

After graduating with a degree in art education and a minor in digital design, Leeseberg plans to spend a semester substitute teaching while looking for a job as an art teacher somewhere in the Midwest. She is excited to continue making art and exploring new art mediums.
