Across every role, Olson demonstrated a commitment to excellence, consistency, and program-building that has had a lasting impact on Viking Athletics.

Bata’s all-around play earned him All-Conference recognition and DAC Most Valuable Senior honors, solidifying his place among the top performers of his era in Viking basketball history.

Sekani Milligen ’13 Men’s Basketball

Sekani Milligen established himself as one of the most dynamic scorers in recent 91心頭利 men’s basketball history during his two-year career from 20112013. A two-time First Team All-Conference selection, Milligen earned Second Team All-American honors in 2011 and Honorable Mention All-American recognition in 2012. Milligen played a key role in leading the Vikings to a 4317 record over his two seasons, highlighted by a berth in the 2013 NAIA National Tournament. He scored 1,060 points in just two seasons, ranking fifth all-time in program history while averaging 18.6 points per game.
Known for his perimeter shooting ability, Milligen made 189 career three-pointers, including 104 during the 201213 season the second-highest single-season total in 91心頭利 history. His scoring ability, leadership, and impact on one of the most successful stretches in the program’s modern era solidified his place among the top players in Viking basketball history.

201213 Men’s Basketball Team

The 201213 91心頭利 men’s basketball team delivered one of the most significant seasons in program history. The Vikings finished with a 237 overall record, including a dominant 121 mark at home, and placed second in the Association of Independent Institutions (A.I.I.) regular season standings. Most notably, the team earned a berth in the NAIA National Tournament the program’s first national tournament appearance since 1987 ending a 26-year drought. Barnes County Museum Hosting “Grand Opening” for Heritage Trail

VALLEY CITY, N.D. (91心頭利) The community of Valley City was designated by the National Park Service as an American World War II Heritage City in 2025, and a new World War II Heritage Trail throughout the city includes a stop at 91心頭利.

The American World War II Heritage Cities program recognizes the historic importance of the United States involvement in World War II. Led by efforts from the Barnes County Historical Society, Valley City is the only community in North Dakota to receive the designation and is the smallest community in the country to receive it.

Interpretive panels have been installed at noteworthy locations throughout the city including one on the front lawn of 91心頭利 sharing how the community supported the war effort. The interpretive panel at 91心頭利 details the colleges roll in the U.S. Navys V-12 program, which trained Navy officers. More than 500 Navy officers trained at the college during World War II. The panel also shares how Valley City State participated in several efforts to train women for various roles related to the war.

The Barnes County Museum is hosting a Grand Opening for Valley Citys World War II Heritage Trail on Thursday, July 9, at 2:30 p.m. at the museum. The Heritage Trail includes interpretive panels and a Talking Trail throughout Valley City, and a new display at the Barnes County Museum located at 315 Central Avenue North.

The Valley City Talking Trail includes oral histories at the World War II locations in Valley City along with engaging audio experiences at several other noteworthy Valley City locations including the historic 91心頭利 Footbridge and Medicine Wheel Park. Joe Stickler, professor emeritus at 91心頭利, is the featured speaker for the Medicine Wheel Park oral history.

VALLEY CITY, N.D. (91心頭利) The 91心頭利 INSTEM Academy brought more than 125 students to campus this month for weekly sessions focusing on science, technology, engineering, and math.

Students from 15 different school districts attended the sessions this summer, which is the seventh year that 91心頭利 has offered the INSTEM Academy. The academy began with just 12 students in 2018.

Its exciting is how far the program has comefrom just 12 students in 2018 to more than 120 annually from more than 15 school districts, said Dr. Jamie Wirth, 91心頭利 Professor and INSTEM Academy director. This growth shows the growing demand and impact of this work.

The INSTEM Academy runs four different weekly sessions in June for students in grades 7-12, who are grouped by class level. The weekly sessions begin on Sunday night and conclude on Thursday afternoon and are full of hands-on activities that build students skills and confidence in science, technology, engineering, and math.

91心頭利 faculty worked with students in various classes including bird watching, robot building, building hydraulic arms, studying the brain, using sonar, monitoring walleye, editing video, using audio recording equipment, and using scientific discovery.

Students in Weeks 1 and 2 participate in activities throughout the week as a large group. This allows them to try many different activities, tour different locations and get their first taste of what life on a college campus is like.

Older students in Weeks 3 and 4 select specific projects to focus on during their INSTEM time. Students work on their project for more than a day and present their results during a showcase event at the end of the week.

Jake RyanJohn, a first year INSTEM participant, said he has enjoyed the projects and meeting new friends.

I’ve always wanted to go into STEM and science related stuff since I was in first grade, he said. This is a great experience for me.

I think these sessions will help me very much in my future, Chayton Yankton said. Yankton participated in building an audio story through sound and editing videos during Week 3.

Athena Starr has been attending INSTEM for three years and participated in a new session led by Dr. Lindsey Leker focusing on neuroscience and the brain.

This session is really into psychology, and I want to be a neuropsychologist, Starr said. We are playing games with things like taste. Its really fun.

In addition to academic activities, students experience trips to Medicine Wheel Park, the Gaukler Family Wellness Center, the 91心頭利 Planetarium, and have free time to experience residence halls.

INSTEM has been a tremendous success this year. The level of engagement from students has been outstandingtheyre having fun, building connections, and really embracing the challenge of STEM learning, Wirth said. Its exciting to see so many of them already talking about returning next year.

Major Milestones Happening in Coming Months

VALLEY CITY, N.D. (91心頭利) Construction continues to move steadily forward on 91心頭利’s Tharaldson Family Athletic Center a $13 million expansion to the current athletic facilities.

Several major construction milestones are scheduled throughout the summer and fall as the project advances towards completion. The project consists of three integrated components:

  • The Ship, which is the new indoor athletic training and competition facility and the centerpiece of the project
  • The Connection Building that links The Ship to the south end of the existing W.E. Osmon Fieldhouse
  • Renovations to the existing W.E. Osmon Fieldhouse

Substantial completion of the project is currently expected in November 2026. Much of the recent work has been on the Connection Building and inside the Fieldhouse, although the public will start to notice more exterior work this summer. The new building will begin to be enclosed in July, and the turf is scheduled for installation in October.

“The progress taking place every week is exciting to see,” said Cory Anderson, Executive Director for University Advancement and the 91心頭利 Foundation. “What was once a vision on paper is now becoming a reality. Each month brings visible progress as The Ship, the Connection Building, and the renovated Fieldhouse come together into a unified athletic complex. This project represents an investment not only in our student-athletes, but in the future of 91心頭利 and the entire region.”

The Tharaldson Family Athletic Center will provide year-round opportunities for athletic training, recreation, wellness, and community engagement while strengthening 91心頭利’s ability to recruit and retain students and student-athletes.

The project remains a centerpiece of the university’s Finish the Voyage Campaign, which continues to seek philanthropic support to bring the facility across the finish line and fully realize its transformational impact on campus.

For additional project information or to learn more about supporting the Finish the Voyage Campaign, contact the 91心頭利 Foundation at 701-845-7203 or visit .

Tharaldson Family Athletic Center – Current and Future Work Schedule

June

Crews are focusing on completing the Connection Building’s roof replacement, enclosing the structure, doing interior drywall work, and constructing the new entrance vestibule that will serve as the primary connection between facilities. Within The Ship, underground electrical infrastructure, interior grading, and foundation work continue. Inside the W.E. Osmon Fieldhouse, the large mechanical systems behind each basketball hoop have been removed, while the old boiler room and south garages are being renovated.

July

Visitors will see dramatic changes to the project as exterior walls begin enclosing The Ship. As side and end walls rise, the scale and presence of the facility will become increasingly visible from across campus and throughout the Valley City community. Interior painting, ceiling installation, and restroom construction will be underway in the Connection Building. Mechanical upgrades and office improvements will continue in the W.E. Osmon Fieldhouse and basketball court repairs will begin.

August

Restroom fixtures, flooring, and mechanical systems will be installed in the Connection Building, while insulation and interior liner systems will transform The Ship from a construction shell into a finished athletic venue. Renovations to the existing Fieldhouse will continue as building systems move toward completion.

September

HVAC, lighting, sports netting and athletic infrastructure will be installed within The Ship, and final interior finishes should be completed throughout the Connection Building.

October

The installation of the 85-yard indoor turf surface begins. Final grading, lighting, signage, and athletic systems will be completed as the facility transforms into a year-round training and competition venue for Viking student-athletes and the broader campus community.

November

Construction is expected to reach substantial completion in November, followed by final inspections, punch-list work, equipment installation, and occupancy preparations. Planning for grand opening and dedication activities will begin as the facility nears completion.

Friends, family and former colleagues gather in front of McFarland Hall and watch as a tree is planted.

VALLEY CITY Friends, family, and former colleagues of Larry Robinson gathered Wednesday morning to plant a tree in his honor on the 91心頭利 campus.

A 1971 graduate of Valley City State, Robinson began his career at 91心頭利 in 1975 and retired in 2024 after nearly 50 years of dedicated service to the universitys mission. He also served 32 years as a Senator in the North Dakota State Legislature. Robinson passed away in September 2025.

Through donations from the District 24 Democrats and the 91心頭利 Foundation staff, a 12-foot Accolade Elm was purchased and planted in his memory in front of McFarland Hall.

The Accolade Elm a fast-growing hybrid resistant to Dutch Elm disease replaces the iconic American Elm that previously stood in front of McFarland Hall but was damaged in a major storm last summer and had to be removed.

The tree planted in Robinsons honor is one of several new trees that have been planted on the 91心頭利 campus recently to replace those lost in the storm last June.

VALLEY CITY, N.D. (91心頭利) 91心頭利 has announced the offering of several new academic certificates for the 2026-27 school year, including certificates in American Sign Language (ASL) and Game Design.

The new certificate in ASL is a collaborative partnership with Lake Region State College, offering students specialized knowledge and skills to communicate with the Deaf community. 91心頭利 has also added new certificates in: Game Design and Development, Graphic Design, Photography, AI in Education, Vocal Pedagogy, and Learner Centered Instruction.

An academic certificate is a formal credential verifying students have successfully completed a specific course of study or training program. 91心頭利s academic certificates are typically 12-18 credits and are great add-ons for current students or practical skill builders for professionals already in the workforce.

91心頭利 currently offers more than 40 combined certificates through its undergraduate and graduate programs.

New Certificates in 2026-27

American Sign Language

This certificate is a collaborative partnership between 91心頭利 and LRSC to offer a 15-credit certificate program awarded by 91心頭利. Students complete eight credits through 91心頭利 and seven credits through LRSC. Completion of the ASL Certificate offers students in future education and leadership positions specialized knowledge and skills to communicate with Deaf people and learn about Deaf culture.

As students graduate and apply for jobs, having an ASL certificate showing you have this extra language skill is really wonderful to have in your back pocket, said Lindsey Solberg, 91心頭利s ASL instructor. If you apply for a teaching position where they have deaf students, this may give you a benefit to getting the job. If youre working in a clinic as a physical therapist or nurse in larger metropolitan areas, the possibility of a deaf patient is higher and having ASL skill is another feather in your cap. It shows that youre willing to learn more, to try more and that youre comfortable with more communities of people.

Game Design and Development

The Game Design and Development Certificate is an 18-credit course of study that blendscomputing, user experience, and digital artthrough hands-on activities. Students learn industry-standard game development while building practical skills in programming, artificial intelligence, 3D graphics, animation, and human-computer interactionpreparing them for careers not just in games, but also in VR/AR, filmmaking, industrialdesign, and serious games for education, training, healthcare, and behavior change.

Graphic Design

91心頭利s certificate in graphic design is offered through the Art department and includes 15 credits related to graphic design, digital media and two-dimensional design. This is a useful credential for marketing and communication students, among others.

Photography

91心頭利 offers a 16-credit certificate in photography through the Art department. Whether its for hobby, a personal business, or building skill for your profession, the photography certificate will take students from beginner through advanced skills in photography.

AI in Education

91心頭利s AI in Education certificate can be completed as either an undergraduate or graduate program. It is a 12-credit course of study focusing on practical and responsible ways of using artificial intelligence in education, including personalized learning, teaching efficiency and student AI literacy. This is a useful credential for current and future educators.

Vocal Pedagogy

This 13-credit undergraduate certificate is recommended for all intended and current voice instructors as well as leaders of community ensembles who seek the opportunity to enhance their musical and teaching skills for the betterment of their voice students and performers.

Learner-Centered Instruction

The graduate certificate program is designed to help educators in any discipline become skilled in equitable teaching and leadership. Courses include subjects such as learner centered systems, personalized learning, and designing for deeper learning.

Alliana Freund knew from a young age she wanted to be an educator. Coming to 91心頭利, Freund has challenged herself to grow not only as a student, but as a future educator as she prepares to student teach.

Hometown: Cando, N.D.
Graduation Year: 2026
Major: English Education

What are you involved in on campus?
I am involved in the Education Club and English Club. Throughout my college years I have been involved with the drama club, choir, and university singers. I serve on the Teacher Education Committee and the Student Advisory Committee, which has been such a meaningful leadership opportunity. I also work as a writing tutor in the Comp Lab andas a student worker forboth the English and Communication Departments. Being involved in so many different areas has allowed me to build relationships across campus and really feel connected to the 91心頭利 community.

What or who inspired you to major in English Education?
Ive honestly wanted to be a teacher for as long as I can remember. Growing up, I had teachers who werent just instructors, they were role models. They showed up every day with patience, encouragement, and a belief in their students, and that stuck with me. I saw how much of a difference they made, especially in a Alliana Freund smiling at the camera alongside three 91心頭利 female studentssmall-town community. Ive always known I wanted a career where I could help people in a meaningful way, and teaching felt like the most natural fit. Choosing English Education specifically came from my love of reading and writing, but at the heart of it, I just want to be the kind of teacher who helps students feel capable, supported, and confident in who they are.

How has your coursework been preparing you for your own classroom?
My coursework has pushed me to think beyond just teaching content and instead focus on teaching students. Ive learned how to design lessons with purpose, differentiate instruction, and think critically about how to support diverse learners. My field experiences, especially working in ESL classrooms, have been incredibly eye-opening and have reminded me how important patience, flexibility, and cultural awareness are in education. Every class builds on the idea that teaching is relational and thats something I carry with me.

Which professor or mentor has had the biggest impact on your education journey?
Its hard to choose just one, but I would have to say my advisor, Jodi Shorma, has had an incredible impact on me. She has been there for me both inside and outside of the classroom. Shes truly just a phone call away, and she has walked me through everything from answering my millions of questions to challenging me to think deeper and grow as a future educator. She constantly pushes me with thoughtful strategies and new perspectives, but shes also incredibly relatable and supportive. Having someone who both believes in you and expects more from you makes such a difference.

Another professor who has made a huge impact is Dave Bass. He is always checking in on students, even outside of class, and genuinely cares about how were doing. He has been especially helpful as Ive navigated questions about student teaching placements, my substitute license, and getting into the classroom. During moments that felt overwhelming, he made the process feel manageable. Knowing I can reach out to him at any time and get honest, practical guidance has meant so much.

I feel really lucky to have mentors in both the English and Education departments who are so invested in their students success.

What is one accomplishment from your program that youre especially proud of?
Being nominated to serve on the Teacher Education Committee is something Im especially proud of. Knowing that faculty trusted me to represent students at that level meant a lot. I also take pride in maintaining a 4.0 while balancing involvement across campus. For me, though, the accomplishment isnt just about grades, its about consistently showing up, working hard, and growing into the educator I want to become.

How do you hope to inspire a love of reading and writing in your students?
I hope to inspire a love of reading and writing by making it personal and relevant. Students connect to stories when they see themselves in them or when they feel invited into meaningful conversations. I want my classroom to be creative, discussion-based, and full of opportunities for students to explore different perspectives. Most importantly, I want them to feel like their voices matter. When students feel heard, theyre much more willing to engage.

What advice do you have for future English education students?
Get involved. Say yes to opportunities, even the ones that feel a little intimidating, because thats where so much growth happens. But also know your boundaries. Its okay to protect your time and your energy. You dont have to do everything to be successful.

Meet as many people as you can. Go to campus events. Introduce yourself. Build relationships with your professors and dont be afraid to ask for help. Some of the best conversations and opportunities come from simply showing up and being willing to connect.

Most importantly, remember why you chose this major in the first place. There will be busy weeks and challenging moments, but if you stay grounded in your purpose, it makes the hard work worth it. Show up to class, be present, ask questions, and really own your learning. Your education is what you make of it, so lean into it.

About the McCready Scholarship

In 2004, Dr. Richard and Ardis (Severson) McCready established the McCready Scholars Endowment at 91心頭利. Each McCready scholar receives full funding for tuition, fees, and books. The scholarship is re-awarded annually for a maximum of four years of support to those who maintain a 3.5 grade point average and make yearly progress toward their degree.

The McCreadys believed in lifelong learning and therefore set up an endowment to support students at 91心頭利. They started with a scholarship in honor of a former faculty member and in 2004 set up their own scholarship endowment. This is our largest renewal scholarship to date, said Kim Svenningsen Hesch, assistant director for university advancement.

Dr. Richard McCready 49, served many years as a professor of quantitative systems at Arizona State University. In 1982, the 91心頭利 Alumni Association presented McCready with the Distinguished Alumni Award. Ardis (Severson) McCready 47, served many years as a legal secretary and public school teacher.

VALLEY CITY, N.D. (91心頭利) 91心頭利 recognized the accomplishments of more than 350 graduates at its 134th Commencement Exercises on Saturday, May 16.

The 351 graduates from the past year represent the largest graduating class in school history and include 53 graduate students earning masters degrees along with 298 undergraduate students.

Your time at 91心頭利 has been marked by growth, achievement and meaningful relationships, 91心頭利 Interim President Allen Burgad 89 told the nearly 185 graduates who attended the ceremony in front of a standing-room only crowd. You have helped strengthen the culture and spirit of this university We are proud of you and thank you for the impact you have had on the university.

Tara Dahl, who earned a Bachelor of Science in Education and is now teaching music in Glendive, Montana, delivered the undergraduate reflection.

I learned that we are capable of doing hard things, Dahl said. This degree was truly a journey an adventure all its own. I got to be a part of department-wide music tours, incredible concert performances, and the grand opening for a fine arts building. My time here was filled with remarkable highs and the most beautiful part of them were the moments of quiet, hard work that shaped the public events. That same type of quiet work happened in every corner of campus.

Michelle Kommer spoke as a representative for the State Board of Higher Education (SBHE), reflecting on the meaningful relationships that students and staff build at 91心頭利. Lindsey Kiecker 23, associate professor of science, delivered the faculty reflection. Kiecker related her college experience and post-graduation job search, encouraging the graduates to identify their passion and pursue it even if it doesnt match their diploma or transcript.

91心頭利 has now conferred 28,425 undergraduatedegrees and 713 masters degrees in its proud history dating back to 1890.

Rebecca ‘Becca’ Bohrer balanced the role of teammate, student, entrepreneur, and mother during her time at 91心頭利. Now preparing to enter the workforce, Bohrer hopes her story will not only inspire future students, but her children and family as well.

Hometown: Stanley, N.D.
Graduation Year: 2026
Major: Physical & Health Education, Minor in Business and Coaching Certification

What are you involved in on campus?
I was a thrower for the 91心頭利 track and field team. I was also involved as a Viking Voyage and New Student Orientation prior to my senior year, helping incoming students get connected and feel at home on campus. I was also a part of Viking Catholic. Being involved in these areas has allowed me to build strong relationships, grow as a leader, and stay connected to both the campus community and my faith throughout my time at 91心頭利.

What inspired you to major in physical education?
Going into my senior year of high school, I had no idea what I wanted to do after graduation. A few of my teachers actually held a little intervention meeting and encouraged me to look into teaching. I decided to give PE/Health a try because Ive always had a passion for movement, taking care of your whole being, learning new things, and being in community. That first year was honestly a trial run, but by halfway through my first semester, I knew this was my path. I love getting to be a part of shaping future generations and helping students find activities they enjoy and can continue for a lifetime. I want to be that supportive teacher and coach who helps students grow and feel successful.

How has your experience as a student athlete and a parent shaped Rebecca Bohrer smiling at the camera with three female students and her daughteryour perspective on teaching and coaching?
Being both a student-athlete and a parent has shaped my perspective in so many ways. It has taught me discipline, time management, empathy, and patience. As an athlete, Ive learned how to work hard, be part of a team, and push through challenges. As a parent, Ive gained a deeper level of understanding and compassion. My daughter has been at every track meet since she was born, and my teammates have truly become like family to her. Hearing her cheer for me from the sidelines is something Ill never take for granted. These experiences have shown me how important it is to create supportive, encouraging environments where students feel valued both in the classroom and in athletics.

Becca and her fiance at graduation, standing in cap and gown holding diplomasHow did you balance your academics, athletics, parenting, and running your own business?
Balancing everything hasn’t always been easy, but it has taught me a lot about time management and priorities. I rely heavily on routines, planning ahead, and reminding myself to be fully present in whatever role Im in at that moment. Some days required more focus on academics, while others shifted toward family, athletics, or my business. I started working with a health and wellness company my freshman year, which has allowed me to build a flexible income in the cracks of my day as long as I have my phone and wifi. Its not always perfect, and the days can be long, but staying organized and keeping my goals in mind helps me continue moving forward.

How has becoming a mother changed your goals or perspective on success?
Becoming a mother completely redefined success for me. Its no longer just about personal achievement, but about creating a life that my kids can be proud of and inspired by. I want to model hard work, perseverance, and balance, while also showing that its possible to pursue your goals without sacrificing your values. It has also given me a deeper sense of gratitude and perspective. Ive learned to take things day by day and truly appreciate the unique life I get to live.

What motivates you to keep moving forward even on the toughest Rebecca Bohrer throwing a discus days?
My biggest motivation is my daughter and the example I want to set for her and my future kids. Keeping my goals in mind of both the life I want to build for my family and the impact I hope to have as a teacher and coach keeps me going each day. On the toughest days, I remind myself that everyone has battles and that growth doesnt come from ease or complacency. I want my story to show others, especially my kids and siblings, that you can dream big and pursue multiple passions. You dont have to be just one thing.

Can you share a moment when you felt especially proud of everything youve accomplished?
One of my proudest moments happened recently when I received a phone call offering me a teaching job after an interview. In that moment, everything really hit me with how far Ive come, how much Ive taken on, and how much resilience it took to get there. Balancing being a student, athlete, mother, and business owner wasn’t always easy, but that moment reminded me that all the hard work was worth it and that Im exactly where Im meant to be.

What are your goals now that you’ve graduated both professionally and personally?
I will be teaching K5 physical education and have the opportunity to be involved in coaching girls’ basketball, track and field, and a summer strength program. My goal is to create a lasting, positive impact on my students through movement and wellness. Personally, I want to continue growing our family which begins with our wedding just after graduation in May. I plan to continue to maintain a healthy lifestyle and building a life rooted in balance, faith, and purpose.

What advice do you have for students wanting to major in physical education?
My advice is to stay passionate about movement and people. This field is about so much more than sports, its about teaching confidence, health, and habits that students can carry with them for life. Be open to learning, stay patient with yourself, and take every opportunity to get hands-on experience. Most importantly, build relationships. The connections you make with your students, peers, professors, cooperating teachers, and school staff make all the difference. Those relationships are what make this career so fun, meaningful, and rewarding.

Justin Cruz initially came to 91心頭利 with athletics as his main focus. Now, Cruz, alongside his family, found his passion for athletics taking him further into life post-graduation.

Hometown: Pueblo, C.O.
Graduation Year: 2026
Major: Strength and Conditioning & Sports Leadership Management, Minor in Athletic Coaching

What are you involved in on campus?
During my time at 91心頭利, I was involved in football and really enjoyed being part of the athletic community on campus. Being around teammates, coaches, and other athletes helped shape a lot of my college experience and gave me a lot of great relationships and memories.

What or who inspired you to pursue a degree in strength and conditioning?
My background in athletics has played a huge role in inspiring me to pursue strength and conditioning. Growing up around sports and competing myself made me really interested in training and performance, but honestly my injuries also played a big part in it. Going through recovery and learning more about how the body works gave me a whole different perspective on training, mobility, recovery, and injury prevention. A lot of the coaches and trainers Ive worked with over the years also inspired me and made me realize this is something I could see myself doing long term.

How do you balance athletics and your coursework?Justin Cruz playing football
Balancing athletics and school definitely taught me a lot about discipline and time management. There were days where things got stressful, but being an athlete helped me learn how to stay organized and keep pushing through even when things got busy. Ive also balanced school while being a dad, which has honestly helped me grow up a lot and stay motivated to keep working toward my goals.

Have you been able to apply what youve learned in the classroom to your own training? If yes, how?
Definitely. I think one of the coolest parts about this degree is being able to actually use what you learn on yourself. Ive learned a lot about recovery, mobility, injury prevention, different training styles, and even why certain exercises work better for performance. Its helped me train smarter and understand my body a lot more instead of just going through workouts without really knowing why.

Why did you choose 91心頭利?
I originally chose 91心頭利 because of athletics first and foremost, but once I got here, I really liked the environment and the people around campus. The coaches, professors, and community made it feel like a place where I could grow both personally and professionally.

What type of athletes or level do you hope to work with and how has your athletic background helped prepare you for this?
Ive actually become really interested in pursuing strength and conditioning within the military. I like the idea of helping people become stronger both physically and mentally while preparing them for demanding situations and careers. My athletic background has helped prepare me for that because I understand the discipline, work ethic, and mental toughness it takes to perform at a high level. Going through injuries and setbacks has also helped me understand how important proper training and recovery really are.

Photo of Justin Cruz and his wife kissing their daughter on the cheekWhats one accomplishment athletic or academic youre really proud of?
Honestly, one thing Im really proud of is just making it to graduation. There was a time where I honestly didnt even think college was something Id accomplish, so being able to graduate while balancing athletics, injuries, life, and being a dad means a lot to me.

What advice do you have for students wanting to pursue a degree in strength and conditioning?
My advice would be to stay open to learning and take advantage of the people around you. There are a lot of great coaches and professors in this field that have real experience and knowledge to share. A lot of learning comes from being hands-on, asking questions, and just getting experience working with athletes and around training environments. If you really care about fitness, performance, and helping people improve, its a really rewarding field to get into.

Hanna Wieland knew 91心頭利 was the place for her the second she stepped on campus. After graduating last weekend, Wieland reflects on her time and experiences she’s had as a Viking.

Hometown: Dazey, N.D.
Graduation Year: 2026
Major: Digital Design & Communications; Concentrate in Digital Media; Marketing Minor

What or who inspired you to major in both digital design and communications?
I have always loved being creative and connecting with people so choosing DigitalDesignand Communications was a way I could do both. Ive always been drawn to projects where I can visually tell a story while also thinking about how it will resonate with an audience, which made this combination feel like a natural fit for me.

Hanna Wieland smiling at the camera alongside her female 91心頭利 volleyball teammatesWhy did you choose 91心頭利?
I chose 91心頭利 because not only was I able to play volleyball, but everyone on campus was so welcoming and made it feel like home. From the moment I visited, it felt like a place where I could grow both as a student and as a person. Being able to find my path through exploration and guidance from various mentors across campus was so impactful in my time here. Those relationships really helped shape my confidence and direction throughout college.

What were you involved in on campus?
91心頭利 Volleyball, NSLS, Spring Blast Co-Chair, Design Club, Alumni & Foundation Office Digital Design Student Assistant, and The College Tour 91心頭利 Student Feature.

Can you share a project or portfolio piece youre especially proud of?
I am so proud and excited to share my Visual Arts Capstone, which was also featured in the 91心頭利 Center for the Arts Gallery. This project pushed me creatively and allowed me to bring together everything Ive learned throughout my time at 91心頭利. It was one of the first branding-focused projects that I completed and helped solidify my passion for creating things for others.

How do you approach creative challenges in design or media projects?
When I am having creative challenges, talking through things out loud is always so helpful for me. Although, when I am very stuck, I will go against all advice and just restart the part of the process I am on because a clean slate is always helpful!

How did you stay organized and focused on both academics and athletics?
Finding a routine for coursework and having a good balance between everything in life is huge when balancing athletics and academics. One thing that was helpful was planning out my week and what I need to complete and when. All the professors at 91心頭利 were also so supportive and communicated with me when I had to be gone, which made it so much easier.

Hanna with familyHave you completed an internship related to a career youre interested? If yes,can you tell us about it?
I have been an intern at the Valley City Barnes County Development Corporation for just over two years now. In my role, I have assisted with a variety of different economic development focused projects but my main focus in that role is to design digital and print content, collaborate on marketing strategies and content creation for the office as well as the Valley City Good Life Campaign, and provide any support I can in the office from research to administrative tasks. Through my internship, I gained the opportunity to support the community of Valley City in a variety of ways. I have been able to be a part of the Summer Nights on Central Committee, where we organize events with live music, food, and activities that bring people of all ages together downtown. Last summer, I was also able to plan, design, and paint a mural in downtown Valley City, which was an amazing opportunity to get my work out there.

Hanna Wieland smiling at the camera alongside female members of the Summer Nights on Central CommitteeI also have been a student employee for the Foundation Office on campus. In this role, I focused solely on design for both digital platforms and print materials such as the bulletin, postcards, and even event assets for the office.

What career are you interested in pursuing post-graduation?
I am seeking a career in the digitaldesign, communications, or marketing fields in which there is opportunity for me to grow both professionally, creatively, and personally. I am also interested in roles that allow me to combine strategy and design while working on meaningful projects that connect with people.

What advice do you have for students looking to pursue a degree in digital design or communications?
For anyone pursuing a degree in digital design or communications, I would say to always say “yes” to any opportunities that come your way. Some of my favorite experiences and project have come from being open to different opportunities. You never know which experience will open new doors, so staying curious and involved can make a huge difference.

Grace Reep came to 91心頭利 after finding her calling in History Education. After transferring from a two-year institution, Reep shares how 91心頭利 prepared her for life post-graduation.

Hometown: Dawson, Minn.
Graduation Year: 2025
Major: History Education; Political Science Cognate

91心頭利 student Mattilyn Nathan with Grace Reep smiling at the cameraWhat inspired you to pursue a degree in History Education?
During the two years of getting my generals completed, I found I truly had the most enjoyment in my history classes. I began to see learning about history as the most important thing a person could do, and I really couldn’t see myself pursuing any other field. The education decision came from having a passion for helping curate safe spaces, wanting to encourage life-long learning, and loving the fast-paced and always-changing classroom environment.

Can you share what led you to start at a two-year college before transferring to a four-year institution?
Iinitially went to a two-year campus fresh out of high school with zero idea what I wanted to do post-grad. Seeing as I wasn’t sure how I wanted to continue my education, I knew getting my generals completed and finding direction from there would be the correct path. I also was familiar with the campus of the two-year I went to first as I had family in the area, I think that slight familiarity made me feel a lot more comfortable than just the jump straight into a four-year.

What were you involved in on campus?
I was involved in as much as possible on campus! I served as the Secretary and then was elected President for the Student Senate, during this role I also represented 91心頭利 at the North Dakota Student Association in multiple roles. I also was honored to serve as the Vice President for 91心頭利’s History Club. I was the Apartment Assistant my last full year through Residence Life, I also worked at the Allen Memorial Library both of my years on campus. I participated in other clubs, organizations, and committees such as Social Justice Council, Phi Alpha Theta, and Curriculum Committee!

Was there a particular class, project, or professor that had a big impact on you?
The entire Social Science department at 91心頭利 became my biggest supporters and the reason I wanted to continue more than anything. Being able to stop into any office with an open door and chat about absolutely anything going on, worldwide or personal, really helped me feel so welcome and encouraged. As for a particular project, I think back to my capstone paper and presentation that was completed in conjunction with my World Wars class. I learned so much about research and was given access to decades worth of historical archives at the Barnes County Museum, I was even put in contact with a gentleman who had lived the experience of the topic which I was researching. The entire project was so rewarding, and being able to present my work at the Dakota History Conference was so incredible. I will forever be thankful to those who mentored me through the process and helped me become a better researcher and writer.

Can you share a memorable moment from your time as a Viking? Grace Reep alongside four 91心頭利 students smiling at the camera
It’s so difficult to pick just one memory, but I really look fondly back on every event I was able to take part in that was held at the President’s House on campus. Student Senate held an annual Christmas party that was full of food, friends, and silly games. Res Life also had a yearly party in the house, there was even a spooky escape room set up in the attic that caused me to genuinely scream, that was so fun! The Phi Alpha Theta ceremony held in the house was also an absolute joy to attend. One more important thing I loved helping out with yearly was the pancake feed hosted at the Eagles Club, the Social Science department always helped out with that, and we had such a good time both years I was there!

What are you doing now? How did your time at 91心頭利 prepare you for life post-grad?
I am currently preparing to move out to the area around Cody, Wyoming. I plan to live there with my sisters and find a job substitute teaching until a full-time position opens in the surroundingschool district. 91心頭利 gave me the life skills I need to be confident that wherever I go, I will be able to find a path towards success.

How did your support system (advisors, faculty, family, friends) help you along the way?
I truly had the biggest support system at 91心頭利, and I am so grateful for it. Being as involved as I was helped me become familiar with every person on campus, leading to having multiple different support systems throughout all areas of my campus life. My professors especially supported me in more ways than imaginable; they were always willing to listen to my concerns and adjust anything as needed with my busy schedule. Shout out Social Science department again, any professor in the department reading this knows I loved popping in and chatting and I truly can’t say thank you enough for always encouraging open communication.

What advice do you have for students wanting to major in History or History Education?
I say to go for it! History can be a daunting program, but I promise that it is so much more than learning names and dates. History teaches you why everything connects, how we learn about the past, and how to become critical of all sources of information. I think it’s super important to be willing to speak up in class, even if you might be wrong – there’s for sure a teaching moment held within your answer. Always get to know your professors and don’t be scared to ask questions, seriously. And finally, be prepared to pick between a Political Science, Economics, or Geography cognate for the program – Political Science is where the cool kids go, if you ask me!

By Dr. Allen Burgad, 91心頭利 Interim President

91心頭利 has much to be proud of from the 20252026 academic year. Our students, faculty, and staff have achieved many accolades, honors, and accomplishments over the past nine months. One of the greatest achievements is earning a post-secondary degree, an accomplishment that opens doors to careers, purpose, and lifelong opportunities.

We will celebrate this milestone with our students at 91心頭利s 134th Commencement Ceremony on Saturday, May 16, at 10 a.m. in the W.E. Osmon Fieldhouse. On Friday, May 15, we will also recognize graduating seniors at the Senior Awards Ceremony in the Larry J. Robinson Center for the Arts.

We strongly encourage all 91心頭利 graduates, families, faculty, and staff to attend the spring commencement ceremony. It is a milestone that cannot be duplicated. I often share that I chose not to attend my own graduation ceremony, and I still regret it to this day. It is a special opportunity to celebrate with those who supported you along the way, an experience that only happens once in a lifetime.

This year, we are proud to recognize 234 graduates, including 39 graduate students and 195 undergraduate students. This represents the largest graduating class in 91心頭利 history. More than 180 graduates plan to participate in the ceremony, and we invite our campus and community to join us in celebrating this important milestone.

Leading up to commencement, we have and will continue to recognize our students through several year-end events which include:

  • SOAR Banquet (May 4) highlighting undergraduate research and creativity at 91心頭利
  • Scholar Symposium (May 5) showcasing student research, academic projects, artistry and creative work on campus
  • Viking Pathway Celebration (May 7) supporting growth in academics, employment, independent living, and wellness
  • Viking Athletic Awards Night (May 11) celebrating our student-athletes and their accomplishments
  • The Forge Open Mic Night (May 12) spotlighting the literary talent and artistry of 91心頭利 students
  • Senior Awards Ceremony (May 15) recognizing honor students and various academic department awards for graduating seniors

I also want to congratulate our spring athletic teams for strong showings at their postseason competitions this past week. We are proud of their accomplishments this year. A special shoutout to 91心頭利 Baseball, which recorded a big victory against the No. 2-ranked team in the nation, Bellevue University, during the Frontier Conference Tournament.

As I reflect on the academic year, I am reminded that being student-focused and learning-centered begins with people. Commencement is more than a ceremony; it is a celebration of perseverance, growth, and the many individuals who support our students along the way.

We look forward to celebrating this milestone together.

One 91心頭利 Retirement

At this time, we have one 91心頭利 retirement to celebrate. Please join me in congratulating our Director for Health & Wellness, Betty Tykwinski. For the past 15 years, Betty has served our campus with care, compassion, and a steady presence, supporting the health and well-being of our students, faculty, and staff. Her impact has been felt by so many, and she will be truly missed. We wish Betty all the best in a well-deserved, enjoyable, and relaxing retirement.
