CourseDescriptionCredits
This course was built with one goal in mind: to help you find a little more time and clarity in a profession that often asks for more than there is time to give.1
Through this course, you will explore the academic evidence behind community-connected learning and examine how your peers are doing it. Rather than focusing on large-scale change, this course encourages participants to identify small, manageable shifts that fit their unique setting and goals. Whether you are just beginning to explore these concepts or looking to expand existing practices, you will leave with new ideas, practical tools, and a personalized plan for creating learning experiences that are authentic, student-centered, and connected to the world beyond the classroom.1
This 15-hour asynchronous professional development course is designed for K-12 educators seeking to deepen their understanding of growth mindset theory and expand its application into instructional practice, equity, psychological safety, and collective teacher efficacy. This 15-hour, one-credit asynchronous course grows out of my work in the Bismarck Public School's Empower[Ed] program, where innovation is not just encouragedit is a core part of how we help learners take ownership of their learning, explore their passions, and demonstrate mastery in meaningful ways. Empower[Ed] has shaped my belief that teaching and learning improve when educators are willing to experiment, reflect, and design learning experiences that are more personalized, relevant, and empowering for students.1

Alongside this foundation, youll also be introduced to practical strategies that help you respond in ways that are consistent, supportive, and relationship-based.1

The program is set up to engage with each NDNAEU by listening to elder interviews, reflecting on your personal new learnings and connections, and applying learnings to your classroom. You can read through the standards that comprise an NDNAEU, then move on to the Key Themes of each NDNAEU. The Key Themes are not exhaustive themes, but are foundational to addressing the NDNAEU. There are key reflection questions, or what is referred to as "Learn From" questions, that contain ideas to keep in mind as you watch the elder videos (usually 3) that are associated with that NDNAEU. Finally, for each NDNAEU, some journal reflection questions will help you tie together the presented ideas.1

In The Anxious Generation, social psychologist Jonathan Haidt lays out the facts about the epidemic of teen mental illness that hit many countries at the same time. He then investigates the nature of childhood, including why children need play and independent exploration to mature into competent, thriving adults. Haidt shows how the play-based childhood began to decline in the 1980s, and how it was finally wiped out by the arrival of the phone-based childhood in the early 2010s. He presents more than a dozen mechanisms by which this great rewiring of childhood has interfered with childrens social and neurological development, covering everything from sleep deprivation to attention fragmentation, addiction, loneliness, social contagion, social comparison, and perfectionism. He explains why social media damages girls more than boys and why boys have been withdrawing from the real world into the virtual world, with disastrous consequences for themselves, their families, and their societies. This course will dive into the book and allow participants to explore the concepts presented by the author is a self paced model.1
